A long time ago, Western priests claimed that holy water would heal wounds. But this has never been the case, for water cannot cure physical injuries. Herbal liniments are the only liquids that can cure wounds. Holy water is used exclusively for religious and occult purposes.
Holy water is only produced through religious rituals. It is taken from the cup that is filled with water and placed on the altar during the ritual. Since this water has been blessed by the ceremony, it has special properties and can be used to fight evil influences. After the ritual is finished, the priest or sorcerer may save the water for later use.
How to Use Holy Water. Blessed water can be used in many ways. It can be sprinkled all over the entrance of a house and on its doors and windows to keep out evil ghosts and the spectre of poverty. It can be sprinkled around the house after a person of dubious intentions has left, to quell any bad vibrations he has left behind. It can be sprinkled on the sorcerer's car and in his office or place of business to wash away all bad luck. If a few drops are scattered in a haunted room or on a possessed individual, the malevolent ghosts will be driven away. If the sorcerer cleanses his face with the water, it will wash unlucky vibrations off his body. If he sprinkles it all over his body before going out into the street, he will secure the protection of the divinities against accidents or against the violent actions of criminals.
Five Types of Holy Water. Sorcery rituals transform plain water into holy water. The five types of water are well water, tap water, lake water, river water, and rain water. Each is used for different purposes. Some are used to fight evil ghosts, some for good luck, some for blessing buildings, and some for other purposes. River water, for instance, is used exclusively for performing exorcisms.
I'm interested to learn more on various ways to make holy waters - the step by step ritual - your own opinion on how does holy waters actually works - and any other things in your knowledge we can keep for the record on this thread please.

Just adding my $0.02 -
Here's a thought -
The holy water is actually created prior to the addition of the salt - generally one will have a vessel of pure water and a paten of pure salt. Each is exorcised individually saying something along the lines of -
"I exorcise thee, creature of water/salt, that thou may be free from all impurities" (A very simple adaptation from Agrippa).
In my opinion it is *this* stage that creates holy water.
When the salt and water are combined you are, in effect, combining elemental earth and water, just as you are combining fire and air when lighting incense.
Therefore, when one purifies, they are using Water and Earth, and when they consecrate they are using Fire and Air.
Just a thought.

Greetings! Technically Todd is correct when using the water in conjunction with the other elements in Elemental magic! Actually, running water is the best. Running water also dissapates static electricity too. The old tales tell of crossing moving water to escape 'witches' etc. (I discovered this as a youth when I ran afoul of a dark entity that was involved in a haunting) I've also heard about priests using rain water as lustral water which is then blessed to form Holy Water. The addition of salt helps keeping a 'charge' on the water. It can be omitted. The boiling of water with ashes will produce a weak solution of sodium hydroxide (lye) or, I guess, a hydrolized salt solution depending on the origin of the ashes. The crystalline structure of the salt may have alot to do with the magnetic fields produced as would the amount of the salt used. In the cleansing bath of some ceremonial rituals, sea water is used as well as the herb hyssop. Bardon claims that these form a 'fluid condenser' which will hold charges of energy in all its permuatations (depending on ingredients and usage). Suffice it to say you'll need water. Running water I've found, is best. Do Not Use Stagnant Water unless all else fails. That and your force of will/conviction will produce Holy Water. I take it we needn't go into the subject of projection of will and faith? Remember, in Magic(k) one must remain resourceful...when water can't be found, urine can be used!It comes from the body sterilized unless you are harboring an infection. I know, gross...but we, as humans (?), are spread across the globe, in all kinds of environs...make do! I'm starting to get faint from my rarified air up here and need to shut up now. I apologize! Peace. (IMG: style_emoticons/default/5.gif)

Some years ago, didn't a French scientist do experiments with water that proved, [for him anyway] that water once contaminated by any other product retained an element of that product no matter how diluted it was, I believe he claimed water then had to have a type of memory. Something which homoeopathy has always known of course. he was rubbished in the usual way by his fellow scientists, and the subject dropped out of sight. If this were to have an element of truth, it could explain the `Holy Water' effect, enough anedotal evidence has been produced over the centurys on the healing qualities of holy or blessed water. May be that `intent' has the same effect. (IMG: style_emoticons/default/wizard.gif)

I was told by a priest that if you want to collect your own holy water that you needed to go to a place where two streams come together. Fill one bottle from one side of the stream, fill yet another from the other side, and fill one from where the two come together. Take all three bottles (or whatever containers you used) home or wherever your ritual space is and just do a basic ritual and say something basic like "I excerise thee, O creature of water, ect..." I actually drove out into the woods and found a place and collected my own as mentioned above. I then had a local priest at a church bless my water, I had (3) large 5 gallon buckets full. In total I had about 15 gals of Holy Water. I also had this priest bless some rocks I brounght back from the woods as well. I would put the rocks around my circle when I formed it, and used the holy water to sprinkle around as well. Cheers, Benjamin Student at SAE World HQ http://www.sae.edu Australia

I know one way of maikng holy water... Fill a cup with rainwater. Take a pinch of salt and say, I bless you in the name of the earth, and the divine. then trow it in the water. Burn down a stick of incense, and say I bless you in the name of air, and the divine. Puy it into the water. Light a candle, and drip the wax in saying, I bless you in the name of fire, and the divine.
place your hand over the mixture and say: In the Salt of the eternal wisdom Blessed be thou In the water of preperation Blessed be thou In the ash which the new earth springeth Blessed be thou In the flam of inspiration Blessed be thou
Be all things be accomplished through the ages, SO MOTE IT BE!
P.S. I found that is helps if you put a crystal in it and leave it outside for the full moon...then it is charged double! lol.

I believe there are also certain springs that have healing properties. On top of my head is Lourdes France. I found this article: http://witcombe.sbc.edu/sacredplaces/lourdes.htmlLOURDES, FRANCE In 1858, a fourteen-year-old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous had a series of eighteen visions of the Virgin Mary who appeared in a niche in the grotto of Massabielle near Lourdes, a village on the Gave de Pau river in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France. The first apparition occurred on 11 February 1858. During her ninth apparition, on 25 February, Bernadette claimed to have been directed to a spring that had hitherto not existed in the grotto. Its discovery by Bernadette, witnessed by hundreds of onlookers, was eventually declared miraculous. Later studies have shown that the water is pure and contains chlorides of soda, lime and magnesia, bicarbonates of lime and magnesia, silicates of lime and aluminium, oxide of iron, sulphate of soda, phosphate, and organic matter. Otherwise, it is believed to contain no therapeutic ingredients. The Miraculous Spring in the Grotto at Lourdes Photograph © Daniel Masson Subsequently, however, the water was claimed to be capable of healing the sick and lame. Of the many thousands of pilgrims who visit Lourdes every year, some claim to be have been miraculously healed. It is estimated that the spring has produced 27,000 gallons of water each week since it first emerged during Bernadette's visions.
