QUOTE(Praxis @ Mar 13 2006, 06:08 AM) *
Well, that definitely is not the case with me, Leanbh.
My age has nothing to do with it.

I simply have not experienced one male witch offline.

Now, online?
Sure. I have met many males who claim to be witches.

Offline?
Nada. All the people that I have met offline who have practiced witchcraft have been female.

Perhaps that will change one day.
Then again, perhaps not.

Regardless of whether I do, or do not, meet a male witch offline - I can see Derek Thomas brought this issue up. There is something about Witchcraft and Wicca that just does not immediately seem like it is meant for guys. That might be because of how many female authors have been putting books out on it. That might be because of the cheesy little "spell books" that come out there for a while, with ladies on the covers in hip witchy garb, and rituals in them involving bubble baths, etc... That might be because of the tendancy for a while in the 80s to exemplify it as a prime example of "women's spirituality", and in the 90s to emphasize The Goddess moreso than The God, etc... That might be because of a combination of those factors in addition to others - or because of something else entirely.

Hopefully, more male witches will write books that give this pathway a different vibe that does not make it seem like just a "chick thing".

Im not sure if he is or if he's not a male witch, but Konstantinos(a book author, of which is one of my favourites) is a male WIccan and practices Witchcraft as well as Sorcery and other arts such as Necromancy, so don't forget him.

People often use Wiccan/Witch interchangeably and therefore see many well known witchcraft authors as Wiccans, just think of Gerald Gardner, who some say is like a founder of modern Wicca and Raymond Buckland for instance, though whether either would describe themselves as pure Wiccan I am not sure.

There are actually several variations of wicca. The Christians have their Catholics, Protestants, Baptist and so on. Wiccans have Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Saxon and so on. One group though I think is specific to women. I'm not sure since I don't know any all female wiccans myself but I believe traditional Dianic wiccans are all female (and perhaps all lesbian) but don't quote me on that. I do know that Dianic wiccans strongly emphisize on the matriarchal aspects of Wicca. I doubt any male would want to be a part of that. Even if they were gay because then you'd want a tradition that emphisizes on men.

Highschool provided me conversations with a few others who practiced magick of some form. Of the seven female practicioners, all started off claiming to be "wiccans," though four of them later dropped this title for either "witch" or "pagan." All left the practice exept one who now calls herself simply "pagan." I knew five males who practiced magick in some form as well. One started off studying witch craft and later started working with Tyson's book on Enochian. I believe that he has left the practice but am not sure about this as he left to another school a few months before I graduated. Another started studying psionics and later blended in Chaos magick. He still practices, though not as much as he used to. A third started with witch craft and quickly moved to the Levay flavor of Satanism. He left the practice as well. A fourth began with witchcraft and tried to make a transition to cerimonial. When he began going to church with his, at the time new, girlfriend he quite practice and study all together. The fifth I knew started working with witchcraft and after a short time, took wicca as his religion. The last time that I spoke with him, he was still practicing.

While there were certainly many of others who studied the subject, the above are those who had studied/practiced for at least six months and had at least some idea of what they were reading/discussing.

Interpret the above the data as you will.

Whether you like it or not, pop culture effects a lot of early decisions to start studying magick. Notice the smilies to the left of your screen.

Lets look at the "witch smiley". (IMG:style_emoticons/default/witch.gif) Note the long hair, this would probably indicate a female smiley.

Now note the wizard. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wizard.gif) No long hair...

Another wizard. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wandwizard.gif) No long hair...

The egyptian magickian. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/egypt1.gif) No long hair...

The chaos magickian. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/922.gif) No long hair...

Well since the person that started Wicca was a man I would say yes men can definitly enter the religion. It can be a bit femenistic at times, overcomensating for the male oriented Religions of mainstream sosiety, but it is definitly not male hostile. Also if calling yourself Pagan, Wizard, Sorcerer or whatever else strikes your fancy make you feel more masculine than using the word Witch, there is nothing to stop you.

There are 7 gazillion different traditions of wicca. Dianic/Feministic Wicca JUST one tradition. I am a man and I am...a witch of sorts...dont practice wicca though. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) The Lord and Lady are man and women. It represent the dualistic princibles of life. What is male without female? Vice versa. Though Gays are accepted in wicca... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uglyhammer.gif)
