Okay, I hope I put this in the right place.

Me and some friends where hiking in the woods and I got this strange urge to cross of the path and into this clearing where the sun was shinning down on this one flower and I got this sudden urge to posses it. I could have sworn I heard a voice say take it. Any way I took it home and followed the standard tinture steps and its still steeping now lol.

But does anyone happen to know what this plant is, or what its used for?

The plant is Lady's Slipper. If you are in the UK I should point out that this is one of the most highly protected species that we have. It is almost extinct, and picking it can carry heavy legal penalties.

Apparently it is also rare in the US, and to quote the herbal that I am reading at the moment and thus have close at hand, "it should not be picked." This is a US book, although I have no idea what the penalties are for picking endangered species in the US.

You should not pick any more that you find! Yes, I do harvest herbs from nature myself despite the harvesting of many wild-flowers being illegal in the UK, but I never touch a plant if it is the only one of its kind in a given area and I certainly don't take any that I can't identify or which I know to be rare, regardless of how numerous they might be in any particular spot.

I also find evidence that it can have opiate like effects (check erowid.org) and I know that historically it was used for attracting love by Hoodoo practitioners. It seems like in present day America it has picked up the association of being a protection herb from neo-pagans.

I was really excited when I saw this post and J*S's response! Lady Slipper it is and it is endangered and protected here in the US due to unscrupulous herb dealers/foragers etc. It is one of the finest nervines in the plant kingdom that I've ever used...they 'move' with the seasons, appearing at random in old deciduous forests...they are breathtaking! Try not to pick them...and keep their presence a secret (from callous collectors)......I'm not sure if they are considered belonging to the Orchid family or not...but they are exceedingly rare! Just reminded of this topic as I went for a walk on my local patch today and found a couple of orchids growing. I wanted to confirm my initial identification (they are definitely plain old Common Spotted Orchids and fairly common as orchids go, but given the lack of biodiversity around here I am still pleased to see them) so I just went online to check and found this rather good site.

Noticed that the Lady's Slipper is an orchid species and it is a schedule 8 plant, which I recall from my E Science days at uni makes it rarer than a incredibly rare thing from Raresville in County Rare.

Okay I used some of the tincture I made with it for a love potion for a friend... and it had less than subtle effects, lol obvious love effects XD

I forget the species, but you should be careful about taking that tincture orally. I believe it may contain atropine which is a potent deleriant, and can cause death in doses anywhere from 10-30mg's, and give you one hell of a bad trip (that last parts a guarantee, death isn't. wanting death, is.)
