I have these reoccuring dreams where some of my teeth fall out. And I mean very vivid, realistic dreams where I feel a tooth is loose, no pain but I can feel it against my gums. Then either some of my teeth fall out or I end up removing them.

The dreams themselves are not always the same but the theme of loosing some of my teeth happens like 3 or more times a month. Like a few days ago I had this dream where I was totally awake and alert, in my bed lying in a way that was totally normal. I didn't even know I was dreaming. But then I notice a tooth is loose, usually on the left of my jaw. I think I chew with each side equally, but one commonallity is I loose teeth on the left side. Then I kept realizing I was dreaming, actually wake up, fall right back to sleep and have the same damn dream all over again.

I have an idea about what teeth in general mean in dreams but I curious about teeth falling out. I have not been able to find anything that sheds any light on this and am hopeing someone here might have some insights.

I have the EXACT same dream, almost in the same way, although I tend to be in different places, many times I'm just in my bed, or in the bathroom looking in the mirror, or driving, when I'll notice a loose tooth, and then it'll come out - no pain, usually no blood - and then others follow. I had a dream once that I was losing more teeth than there were in my mouth, just pouring out. Sometimes I'll chew them up and swallow them too, never did quite understand that one.

For me it's become a lucid dreaming trigger. When I lose a tooth I'll almost inevitably be so shocked that such a thing would happen spontaneously that at first I would wake up, but eventually I would realize I must be dreaming because it was so impossible. I used to have a dream like that about every few weeks or so, now I think it's been a couple of months since the last time.

I have heard several theories on the meanings. My mother suggested it had to do with vanity and the fear of losing one's looks, charm, power over others, etc. I mention her because she's generally good at dream interpretation. One of my close friends who's often spot on, pointed out that it was a painless experience rarely involving blood, and the particular variation where I lose more than I have in my mouth, as a reference to material wealth, and the fear of not having money, losing your money, but the acknowledgement that the suffering from this is superficial - it doesn't hurt, and I didn't lose any precious blood.

Personally, for me both of those things would have to be waaaay down in my subconscious if they are there, cause money and good looks are about the last things I ever take into consideration, but it's worth mentioning that in all cases I've had some kind of monetary stress, or was in a position where I wasn't getting a lot of attention for one reason or another; or both.

I guess it must be a more common theme than I realized, either that or... we're soul mates... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/004.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/13.gif)

that's my cents. I'd be interested to hear from anyone else with this theme in a dream before.

peace

LOL! That would make three of us! I've been plagued at times with tooth loss dreams. I think its indicative of losing power/control but not too sure.
One of my dreams was very lucid and real and I was facing this figure dressed in a cowled robe. We were standing on the roof of an old barn. The figure was carrying a scythe and we were facing each other. I asked who he/she/it was and they laughed, pulling back the hood and I was facing myself! Whilst I looked the thing looked at me, smiled and all its teeth fell out leaving a mouth full of maggots! Decidedly not pleasant. Its face changed to the visage of Death (skeleton) and I awoke, violently. That was over thirty years ago and a half mouthful of teeth! Yikes! Being of good English stock, I inherited soft, crumbly teeth...and with the medications I'm on the teeth are dropping like flies. (Sorry for the implied pun) Ah well...the tribulations of life! Well in one sense I am glad to hear others have similar dreams. On the other I can't help but wonder if somehow we are not sharing some kind of psychic bond or something really out there. I mean two mods and admin, three people thousands of miles away from eachother, only thing in common is participation on this site, all having similar dreams.

One time I had a dream like this and I kept spitting up razors. I didn't want to swallow anything because they were razors and I didn't want to kill myself. So I ended up with my mouth hanging over a sink and I just kind of drooled these razor blades along with my teeth. As far as that dream goes I assumed it had to do with saying things I shouldn't or speaking about things that dangerous or may put me in danger.

I was thinking that maybe vainity could fit as vagrant dreamer suggests but like him my appearance just is not a high priority. I do think I tend to be fastidious about my oral hygen and I know a couple of my teeth are kind of crooked, not like in a real gnarly kind of way. And actually in the 8th grade I had braces and when I had them removed my teeth were perfectly straight. But I stopped wearing the retainer because it kept me awake at night and I kept thinking I've swallow it in my sleep. So a couple of my teeth got misaligned. Which was really fraustrating because before I had the braces my teeth were straight already, aside from a very minor under bite.

Another thing that stands out is that sometimes in these dreams my teeth appear damaged or decayed. And I don't want to loose my teeth so maybe it is just an unconcsious manifestation of a fear of lossing my teeth. But it could also be related to lossing overall health. I think loss of health would make more sense than vanity (for me at least).

To me, teeth represent two things: The ability to defend yourself (biting) and the (external) ability to acquire nourishment, ie. in the sense that chewing is the first act you perform when you bring food into your body.

Therefore, if I dream of my teeth falling out or succumbing to decay, these are the first areas of my life I look at: Am I worried about my ability to defend myself or about my continued ability to gain nourishment. In a transferred sense, this would mean f.ex. that I might have (sub)conscious worries about my job, health, how I appear to others etc.; Mind you though, it's not so much vanity as it is about the possibility of appearing weak (think alpha individuals who worry about loosing their status).

This would be my take on it anyway.

Cheers,

A

Well I kinda doubt that it's a psychic bond because I sometimes have dreams like that too. Unless I'm in your little club. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/13.gif) I have dreams where my teeth fall out and everything, but I only have it every so often. Perhaps you should make a poll about this to see if anyone who practices magick tends to have this dream or if it really is just a few of us.

Well I did a little digging and as it turns out dreaming of your teeth falling out is amung the most common dreams expereinced. I asked the question on yahoo answers and I came up with a few different responses that I hadn't considered.

One answerer said that it has to do with anxiety. And that would make sense because on thing people do when they are anxious is they grind their teeth. So it would make sense that in dreams they might dream of them falling out if they have a lot of worry or stress in their life.

Another guy said it has to do with "speaking falsehoods" - lying. While I can see how I sometimes say things that might get me into trouble if I lie its generally just part of a joke or for a real good reason. but someone else might be able to relate to that better.

Lasty a responder said that it had to with changing views or losing old attitudes. He also associated the left side with matterial and selfish things as well as greed and the right with spiritual/unselfish things.

In my case it was prophecy. The meds I'm on coupled with genetically disposed towards soft teeth have led me to having my teeth literally rot and fall out. They are literally aiding my demise! (Finally this year I get my annuity so I can afford a new smile and to carve out the rot!)

I'm sure the anxiety thing and changing of ones life path also have a part to play...*sigh*

Sounds like a lot of focus on your teeth. I would certainly expect that to be reflected in some of your dream content.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that another due said that he would have that kind of dream when he was with his ex-girl friend who drove him crazy. So I guess if you are around people who drive you nuts or make you feel anxious then that might also be a cause.

Well laast night I was watching an episode of Spike's world's most amazing videos - wipe outs and some of the stuff people did to wipe like on skate boards or snow boards including getting knocked in the teeth. And I thought about it a little and I think dreaming about loosing my teeth could simply just reflect my fear of getting teeth knocked out some how.
