Well, if you want to make it from any other material, then write it on parchment...If you mean if there's any other metal...I think you should stick to the book. You can Try Athena's site for some of the metal, it's on her sig (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) . Good luck!

Ose is mercury. Does any1 know where I can get sum mercury, does it even have to be made of mercury?

In truth one could not create a sigil in the same manner as the others are made (with gold, silver etc.) with Mercury. I feel this is one of the things that is overlooked in the Mathers/Crowley edition.

The main reason is that Mercury appears in a liquid state at room temperature. The Mercury is usually added to either silver, tin, or lead when the metal is nearly cooled thus creating a crude alloy.

Mercury nowadays can be a pain in the ass to find. It can be dangerous if ingested but if one is careful this usually isn't going to happen. I'm sure now with the combination of paranoia and stupidity rampant in the world it is probably extremely difficult to obtain.

Whether the sigil needs to be made of Mercury(alloy) is a matter of opinion. There are some other threads in this section that deal with the idea. I have yet to hear of someone actually making the sigils that fall under mercury in this way and they usually substitute silver or tin if they use metals at all.

If you decide you want to do this I will give you a hint on where to obtain pure usuable mercury.

At one time every building and often multiple rooms had some mercury "hidden" in plain sight within it. If a room has heat it has mercury present. I'll leave it at that.

chaoscrowley37 hint is enough to give you a temperature rise (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

If you must use Mercury may I suggest you first draw the spirits sigil into new wax, then fill the sigil which you have scratched out of the wax with mercury. Then cover the wax with either a glass or clear plastic disc, square etc whichever is easier.

You may find it easier to draw the sigil with sympathetic ink onto genuine vellum or parchment.

I use zinc or silver. Zinc because it is close to it on the periodic table. Silver, well that is an occult secret.

There is a way of 'fixing' mercury using an electroplating technique. This will give you an electrically bonded coating of mercury to another metal anode. The 'fixing', unfortunately, is not stable. It will deteriorate. unless stored in a neutral environment. Stick with zinc, silver, tin or....parchment. If using parchment you can always infuse the fibers with a 'mercuric' solution before the drawing of the sigil. This method is effacacious and inexpensive.
Warning - Mercury, though obtainable, is toxic...when heated it will produce toxic fumes, etc. It's considered to be hazardous waste. (I've used it for years...but then I've had lab training...) Don't mess with it, you may be up on handling it but if you've a family...all bets are off.

I totally agree with this. I hope my earlier post was not taken as an endorsement to go out and start playing with mercury. I had intended to show that the metals that correspond with the sigils that fall under the planet mercury are not necessarily pure mercury as shown in other texts.

I truly admire the Mathers/Crowley text as it is a great version of the MS. that compose the system, there are times though that deeper questions require one to step outside of that and other modern editions.
