If your thinking of Ceremonial Magick i would choose Evocation rather than Invocation.
Make a "Triangle of Art" in the East (or if the Spirit is associated with a particular direction, choose that).

Do like in the Goethia but with less of a "demanding" emphasis.
If you want to be sure of safety you can call upon the entire Hierarchy the Spirit belongs to as a part of the calling.
"that he appears in a comely fashion" and the whole thing.

Otherwise, simply using the Triangle of Art, a PHYSICHAL circle, the LBRP and then do an Invocing Ritual of the Pentagram (including Spirit passive and active) and then stating who you wish to meet and why, asking fror the grace of the highest names and so on works.

Lots of incence associated with the Spirit is a good medium.

Make sure you are VERY familiar with the LBRP and can do it with full concentration if something goes wrong.

It should be said that Planetary Spirits, Elementals and so on are not necesarily benevolent.
They are rather "Automata" being of only one essence.

Angelic beings are persons and thus their benevolence are a bit up to you, them, situation and so on.
To be on the good side of Divinity might be an idea.

For invoking, just create a ritual space and call it forth and into yourself. Dressing up like the creature, visualizing yourself as the spirit, interpretive dance, altered consciousness (use watever you want to achieve this), and many other things help along the process. If you really want to, you could sit in the Triangle, but alot of people find this dangerous (although it has been done by the Chaote community for years now). If you wish to make it more of an in-depth process, then try explaining each part of both your ceremonial robes and your "costume" for the spirit. (example: "These slacks that I remove represent my movement through the world of flesh and the binding of my shell to the ground. I remove this" *removes then picks up bottom of other costume* 'This is the workings of spirit, this is the representation of movement through the ethereal and the powers of N. to move through all and chieve her/his/it's goals." ect, ect.)
I hope that was helpful for you. ^_-
