In my search for the "right" path i have stumbled across Sorcery and I am not sure whether i should practice it or not. I want to try everything, speaking with demons and spirits, magick, psychics, you name it, i want to at least try.

I have read that sorcery has little to no rules as to what is wrong or right (other than the practitioners morals of course) and i feel this might be right for me because i am a really individual person.

If you think this might be a good path for me please (and i'm sorry if this is spell begging) let me know of some basic spells or other preliminary exercises that will give me a taste of what sorcery is like.

thanks

I do not know which path is 'good' or 'right' for you.

I'm also of the mind that no particular preliminary exercises are necessary to use spells and incantations - they either work or they don't. And it's up to you to find out which ones work through experimentation.

If you want some potential starting points, here are a few books that have been used for a century or more:

Six and Seventh Books of Moses
Egyptian Secrets: or White And Black Art of Man and Beast
Pow-Wows: or Long Lost Friend
Grimoirum Verum (the end section with miscellaneous spells)
Key of Solomon (also the end section, not the main part)

Have fun!

my voice in the chorus:

as it is a discovery process, you must discover it yourself

a few basics can be taught, and those books should get you started off

then it is up to you to carry on the work

and a a few other things, like:

each of us is a eternal individual, voluntarily incarnating here, so find the real you

the real you has a purpose in being here, discover it and get on with it

the real you also may have the very knowledge you seek, which is why this path resonated with you

humans forget everything about their real self when they are born, usually for rediscovery filling in the cracks and new ideas

each of the real eternal us has at least one teacher, guide and friend - find them

and we usually have previous alignments, so find those too

these will lead you to the source, from which you become a sorcerer, doing sorcery

basically ask, then shut up and listen

don't expect fireworks

subtle is not just a word

feel it, then feel it again later for effect

that should do you for the first few years, if not this lifetime

O.K. I think I understand, basically find my "true Self?" and then find out everything about it and just go with the flow from there.

Would you suggest mediation, dreamwork, evocation (of my true self that is)?

A good book I recommend for beginners is "Witchcraft; Theory and Practice" by Ly DeAngelis. Its relatively short and touches on a wealth of subjects. It covers basic concepts such as discovering yourself and discovering the true nature of the world around you and it gives some basic exercises you can practice. Witchcraft and sorcery are basically the same thing - ways to manipulate any concept of magick. There is no singular path unless you are part of a specific tradition - thelema, golden dawn, OTO, asatru, wicca and others. Some tend to focus more specifically on rituals and manipulating magick, some also incorperate religion. And there more eclectic paths that allow practitioners to pick and choose what works for them, such as chaos magick. Which if you want to learn about that I suggest reading "Condensed Chaos" by Phil Hine.

Also make sure you understand the difference between real magick and the stuff popularlized by pop culture and the media. Harry Potter, Charmed, Buffy, Angel and all those other fantacy genres do not accurately depict real magick. Real magick works on a far more subtle level and you cannot expect to see instant results.

In the mean time I would suggest that you browse the site and SM's library for addition reading. We have also compiled a thread specific to beginners in the neophyte hall forum. This link will redirect you to that: http://www.sacred-magick.org/index.php?showtopic=5217 I strongly suggest you read through it.

Thank you so much. This opened my eyes to the fact that you dont need to be pagan to practice witchcraft.

Absolutely - you just need to decide what it is you want, and work to get there. Kind of like everything else in life. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
