I had a strong interest in bonsai very many years ago and was cultivating them until I went on vacation and my younger sister neglected them all. and led to their ruin. It is a fascinating hobby. I recommend that you read up on them for a while before investing in a tree. The cheaper ones are made of shrubs that are styled to look treelike. Books will give instructions on how to care for purchased bonsai and how to make your own trees from cuttings. It can take decades to cultivate a really nice real miniature tree. You may find them in plant shops and at plant sales at public gardens and arboretums. Some parks, gardens, and arboretums have bonsai shows once in a while. Start with reading and seeing if there are any upcoming bonsai exhibits in your area and go from there. When I was a hobbyist, my then bf and I lived on one end of Long Island (near NYC) and found a bonsai shop and "farm" on the other end of Long Island somewhere near the Moriches or someplace like that--and we would visit once in a while.
