Hi! Welcome!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and story. I felt a sense of camaraderie with your description of confronting the unknown and wanting to "know how this stuff works."
I'm sorry to hear that one of our first ventures into a spiritual practice left you feeling empty inside. My sense is that people often need to try a number of different practices before settling on a path, perhaps because the knowledge and experience that one gains from trying a bunch of stuff gives one more insights into what one needs to do on the journey. Keep reading and trying things, and I'm sure that the people here will answer your questions about various systems if you want to ask them.
Best of luck!

MonkMan418 --------------------------------- "It sometimes strikes me that the whole of science is a piece of impudence; that nature can afford to ignore our impertinent interference. If our monkey mischief should ever reach the point of blowing up the earth by decomposing an atom, and even annihilated the sun himself, I cannot really suppose that the universe would turn a hair.” --- Aleister Crowley
“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special." --- Stephen Hawking
Therefore, God is a monkey.
