according to the hindu tradition, the letters of the devanaagari alphapet concern to a chakra and the single influence of a chakra in a person is different. so, the guru looks ehich chakra has to be stronger and then create a mantra with the letters according to the chakra.

I googled it and went onto wikipedia. =] & found...

QUOTE
A chakra is a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy. The word chakra literally translates as wheel or disk and refers to a spinning sphere of bioenergetic activity emanating from the major nerve ganglia branching forward from the spinal column. There are seven of these wheels stacked in a column of energy that spans from the base of the spine to the top of the head. There are also minor chakras in the hands, feet, fingertips, and shoulders. Literally, any vortex of activity could be called a chakra. It is the seven major chakras that correlate with basic states of consciousness.... (NB: original text not meta-enhanced.)

Chakras are considered to be a nexus of metaphysical and/or biophysical energy of the human body.

Chakra are often explained according to the protocols of evidence-based medicine like acupuncture points. In some Eastern thought, chakras are considered to be gradations of consciousness, and states of the soul, and 'proving' the existence of chakras is asking to 'prove' the existence of the thought process. A mystic deals with these metaphysical concepts as a model for their internal and external experience, and when talking about 'energy centres', they are generally talking about subtle electromagnetic forces, which connect to the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.

You probably could've googled it yourself so this isn't really much help.

But I thought to read up on it again anyway. I was going to do an artwork of the 7 chakras in year 9. It would've been really pretty! But I changed the idea.

As a side note of importance, in the yogic tradition (and indeed, tantra tradition which places large focus on the chakras) the pronounciation of the biji mantras are considered extremely important. In this case though they are spelled say LAM, the actual pronounciation in english is more akin to LuM with the U being very sparse, and much more focus placed on the Mmmmm at the end, that is for mental recitation. Normally for verbal mantra, the pronounciation is more LuNG, NG again being the main focus. The mantra should be vibrated into the area of the chakra, when done properly that area alone will vibrate. The chakras are points where the nadi's intersect, the main 7 used (some traditions use 5 or 12) are intersections along the sushumna, which is considered the most important nadi in the yogic tradition. Their uses are many, primarily they were used for mystic experiences, for overall development of the entire being and spiritual 'ascension' or rather, unfolding (for in truth it is already there), as well as for the achievement of siddhis, though they were normally (except in some tantric sects) a side effect, and not an aim in and of itself. For example, meditation on Muladhara (and this is real, deep meditation which most people actually do NOT reach...despite them thinking they are 'meditating'...they are not in the way the yogi's meant) is said to bring forth the siddhi of seeing the past, present and future, levitation, control of semen, bliss, 'superhuman' strength and excellent health. Most of these powers supposedly only being available after kundalini has awakened.

Chakras:
Manipura, mantra LAM, Svadhisthana mantra VAM, Manipura - mantra RAM, Anahata mantra YAM, Visuddha mantra HAM, Ajna mantra SHAM, Sahasrara manta OM.
But, there is a question, what is you reason for practices of chakrayoga.
There is a sevral possibilities.
The first is clean away chakras for way out of kundalini.
The second is for obtaining supernatural powers.
In the first case you must clen away all chakras.
In the second case you must du quiet chakra Ajna and the next time concentrate your mind into only one chakra, of what powers do you want.
And it take for a many years.
See you Arthur Avalon (sir. John Woodroffe) , Sat chakra narupana, Paduka panchaka, The serpent power,

Recite the Gayatri Mantra daily. Within a fews day, you will feel the difference. Syllables through
the entire chant effects different parts of the brain and the corresponding chakras (by syllable).

Its the master mantra.
It is Sacred.
...And the all in one. All you will ever need.

Mantras are useful tools in developing your spiritual body, although they are just one among several basic tools. I've never used them on a regular basis but that is just because of how I was taught. I have done mantras enough that I can see there are effective and they seem to be safe enough. Mantras are used for things other than to strengthen your chakras, meridians and aura, but perhaps I should keep it simple.

There are explanations about chakras elsewhere in the forum, but primarily they are gateways. They take in energy from outside your body and disperse it from your body to the outside. They aren't the only energetic structure that performs this function, but they are the main ones. They also have other functions, but in the name of simplicity let us leave it at that for now.

This says it best, folks. Google "tattva shuddhi" if you are interested in doing the kind of chakra meditation in which you concentrate on a chakra and "vibrate" its mantra. The mystical aim is to "awaken" the chakra and transcend its elemental limitations. What you are doing in chakra meditation, though, is priming a neuroelectrochemical loop in the brain to literally light up and cause a paradigm shift in consciousness. .
