Awesome. I've been having obe's a lot lately. Have you tried yoga? That's when I first did it and when I do it the most. After that it became a lot easier.During yoga you are raising spiritual and physical energy. Then resting after every asana (pose). During the last pose (Chibasa or also known as corpse pose) is when I leave my body. Because after yoga you are tired mentally and physically but spiritually energized. Thus making everything but your spirit tired. Making it way easier to OBE.
I'll explain how it happens to me. Hopefully this will help you or someone else. I understand that everyone is different and different things work for different people.
In chibasa I imagine a blanket slowly rising from my feet to the top of my head. Relaxing every muscle it touches. Try not to focus on anything but your breathe. Don't interact with thoughts. If they come let them just slide away. Once you are relaxed you'll start seeing the colors behind your eye lids. They'll start moving and I just watch them. Forget about everything but the colors. Make yourself almost catatonic in a way and just watch the colors. Slowly the colors merge together into one big blob of color until you see nothing but the colors. Then (this is the hardest part to explain) you suddenly turn around completely and everything melts away. Then you'll realize you're no longer inside your body. (IMG:

Hopes this helps. I know my OBEs are nothing like they say in the books. I don't just rise from my body. I sink inside myself then Consciousness melts away and I sort of "flip around it".
I'm not very good at descibing things. And this method may not be as easy for everyone as it is with me. I'm an indigo child and sense energy very well and see vivid colors during meditation or altered states
But my main point is maybe you're too tired spiritually when you're sleepy? This would be a possible solution. After my first OBE in chibasa it has become easier out of chibasa or right before sleep.
Take Care
