Is it really necessary to follow the grimoire in evo/invocation?

Can we not design our own ritual?

People don't usually follow the grimoires to begin with, they follow the CM methog starting, and ending with a bunch of banishings, and invocations, etc...You CAN design your own rituals, but it's not recomended until after a few years experience with evoking entities.

That would be like trying to build your own car without first learning how to build one with the standard design. The reason that these grimoires and methodas are around is because they actually work. Just guess how many emails I get stating I have tried to evoke so and so and it didn't work. How can one create their own ritual unless they have tried the foundation magics and methods? Well I guess ifyou have 20 years experience at magic you could probably come up with something good, but before that, why not try some methods that work that were written by people who have been evoking their whole lives (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) As far as do we need to go by the grimoires, well it helps, but it is not necessary. If you ook a couple of topics down in this section you will see my working with the Daemons article that is about as far away from the groimoires as one can get. If you do come up with your own method, please don't write a book about it until you have had success with it and perfected it for 10-20 years LOL. Damn I wish some authors went by this rule!

So I recommend trying a few different methods for quite a few years before coming up with your own method YOu will stay sane longer that way. Also, theory about magical practices most often seems irrelevant to how they actually work. Most often people want to devise their own evocation methods because the ones out there seem to difficult or long. Well this isn't the sandbox.

Short answers (Only answering from my experience with evocation):

1. No.

2. Yes.

For me, the only thing that's really neccesary is a firm awareness of my circle, astral vision/perception, and an "enflamed" desire to talk to the spirit. That desire takes form in physical, mental, emotional words spoken to call whatever spirit, in my own words. Other than that, I don't personally see the reason for going through all the hooplah of traditional methods, but hey, that's me.

I'm not saying that traditional methods are useless. I don't know, because I've never used them, but if others found their way to success using them, I say, go ahead! It just hasn't been my experience, nor my desire to experience, so, I answered the way I've answered.

I should also say that before beginning evocation, one most definatly SHOULD have a grounding in the basic things that makes evocation work (from my expererience and point of view only), namely, the ability to "see" the spirit, and if not see him, sense him....to be able to "talk" to the spirit, if not in words, in moving images and feelings. And most importantly, the ability to make the spirit leave should it become troublesome. All of these things, and more (I know I'm leaving some things out, but these are the first things that come to mind as being important to ME, other things, I probably take for granted at this stage in my development) can be learned by repeated practice of energy manipulation and banishing. LBRP+LBRH, your own thing, whatever. "Mundane" ritual teaches you ALOT if you give it time. If you have no background whatsoever, then yeah, I suppose the traditional methods would be the way to go.

But strictly speaking, I only use an LBRP, LBRH, or a Solar Ball (or any combo), some focal point for the spirit, like a sigil, and my desire. Other than that, that's it. No bells or whistles. Though, during the last evocation, I did use a Wand that was gifted to me, but normally, I use nothing but myself. (no triangles, predetermined "rants", etc)

And the solomonic holy water is nice to have around too. I use this to purify my circle space before the working, and after the working I aspurg the whole house just in case. I typically don't have any problems with phantoms and unwanted beings thus far. I think it is pretty low maintanance and effective.
