Who's Who in the Underworld

The existance of evil and its demonic deliverers has been pondered since the beginning of time. There are many views on the subject, as well as many people who have dedicated their lives to demonology.
Some will be mentioned throughout this essay. Their work through the centuries has been agreed upon, argued over and the validity, at times, by some, completely ignored. I suspect that this is due to the controversial nature of the subject. Varying religions and cultural backgrounds certainly have affected the information passed down to us by the brilliant researchers, philosophers and historians of centuries past. However, there are too many similiarities to ignore. In light of this, in some instances, the information may be in conflict with information found through resources other than those I have utilized here.
Alphonsus de Spina, in 1467, published his Fortalicium Fidei (Fortress of the Faith). He became a professor at the University of Salamanca and later a bishop of the church. He was consdidered an authority on all things theological, including demonology. He concluded that there are ten orderes of demons and that they totalled in the millions. He categorized the demons as falling into nine specific types. He also divided them into classes according to what their purposes are. Following the list of the demonic names and ranks are the explanations of the types and orders as de Spina recorded them.
Johannes Weyer (Weir), another authority in demonic studies, wrote his De Praestigiis Daemonum in the 16th century. He studied the works of such authorities as Diodorus Siculus of the 1st century, the philosopher Apaleius of the 2nd century and many other notable historians. It is noted that Weyer said that the infernal regions had 66 princes that commanded 6,666 legionsand each legion being comprised of 6,666 demons or devils. The figures here bring to mind the well recognized "number of the beast", 666. Some Cabalists believe that this is 600 (false religion), 66 (greed) and 6 (this world). Weyer felt that the names of the demons explained what their intentions and/or duties were to be. many demonics in Hebrew tradition were named after places (Astaroth) or qualities (Remmen, meaning loftiness).
Alphonsus de Spina's Nine Types of Demon

1. False gods 2. Lying spirits 3. Inquisitors
4. Vengeful 5. Deluding 6. Creators of Tempests
7. Furies 8. Accusers 9. Tempters

de Spina's Division of Classes

Fates
Poltergeists
Incubi and Succubi
Armies
Familiar spirits
Nightmares
Those produced by intercourse with humans
Those in disguise
Those who assail saints
Those who persuade

Ten Orders of the Demonic

Seraphim
Angels
Principalities
Virtues
Thrones
Cherubim
Domination
Powers
Potentates
Archangels

There is a supposed pattern to their specific lull and peak in activity, our own yearly calendar. Here is a list of the Chief entities that are most active during the corresponding months.

January Belial
February Leviathan
March Satan
April Astarte
May Lucifer
June Baalberith
July Beelzebub
August Astaroth
September Thamuz
October Baal
November (unknown)
December Moloch

The " Lesser Key of Solomon" or the " Lemegeton", plays an important role in the history, study of, summoning of and exorcising of demonics. The first pasrt of the book, Goetia, gives the conjurations for 72 different spirits or demons. It also includes the ranks and offices of the demonic heirarchy.
The second part of the book, Theurgia Goetia, deals with the sprits at the cardinal points. The third part is called the "Pauline Art" ( reason unknown), it concerns the spirits of the hours of the days and nights of the Zodiac. The fourth part, the Almadel, deals with the " Quarternary of the Attitude", or the four other choirs of spirits inhabiting hell. The last part of the Key of Solomon is the Book of Orations and Prayers, said to have been used by King Solomon himself.
Another controversial demonologist that received much criticism on her work was the Latin American, Rita Cabezas. The criticism was not in her findings, yet in her means of attaining the information. She spent some time communicating with those residing in the Infernal regions. Her work was built, according to her, on the word of the demonic themselves. This may have been through conjuration, summonings, channeling or even seance type activitities. As we are all aware, this was an extremely risky approach. Her findings were that there were the following six principalities (in spanish): Damian, Asmodeo, Menguelesh, Arios, Beelzebub and Nosferateus. Under each of these were six govenors for each nation. She claimed that in Costa Rica, for example, are Shiebo, Quiebo, Ameneo, Mephistopheles, Nostrodamus and Azazel. The United States, in her findings, was territory to Ralphes, Anoritho, Manchester, Apolion, Deviltook and alas, one unnamed. The word from the mouths of demonic beings could be considered incredulous, to say the least. Please note some of the similiarities in her findings. Apolion, in her findings, seems surely to be Apollyon from the research done by the great demonologists mentioned previously. Also, Asmodeo is clearly the same entity as Asmodeus. Another similiar entity to Ralphes, is none other than Raphael, the very one that did banish Asmodeus to the desert. Mephistopheles, Azazel and Beelzebub are mentioned in a multitude of other literary pieces on the subject, dating back centuries.
There are a number of other names that have been documented as that of demons. Some may be cultural or regional names given to already listed entities. However, the following is included to avoid any erroneous omittances.

Agliarept Tarchimache
Lucifuge Rofocale Fleurety
Sargatanas Pu Satanachia

There are some noted as being demonics that also have a very high reverence as being benign and even maternal/paternal figures, in pagan cultures from past and present. They are as follows :

Hecate Kali
Pan Loki
Lilith Baphomet

Cultural differences may divide humanity in many ways, however, we are unified in our intrigue and in our fear when it comes to the Infernal regions. Here are some examples of the evil that plagues our other lands.

- Apep (Egypt) Opposer of the sun god Ra. Takes the form of a serpent/crocodile.
- Chernobog (Baltic/Slavic) "The Black God", rules evil, misfortune, death and night.
- Elathan (Celtic) Domain is the darkness
- Erebus (Greek) Son of Chaos, guardian of the darkness surrounding hell.
- Grand Bois (Hailti) Master of the forest and of night
- Hatu-Atu-Topun (Polynesia) Dangerous female demon specifically at dawn and dusk.
- Ikwaokinyapippilele (Panama) Causes ills of all kinds.
- Lilitu (Hebrew) Ancient female demon connectd with Lilith.
- Manuval (New Guinea) Active only at night, spreading ills, chaos, and the like.
- Mush (Iran) Demon of eclipses and of night.
- Nyx (Greek) Daughter of Chaos, sister to Erebus.
- Oroan (Guyana) Another demon of the eclipse
- Sakarabu (West Africa ) Judge and demon of darkness
- Oni (Japan) Demon that creates and lives in the eye of its tempests.

With the findings of our predesessors and our ambition to discover more about the inhuman entities that walk among us and reside below us, we hope over time to unfold these most intriguing mysteries of the Infernal regions. Knowledge is power.

This site is good, it gives lists of demons and information on them; it basically uses information from the old grimoires:

A correction needs to be noted in Daev's post. Nyx is in no way evil. In fact, she is the first Mother in Greek Mythology. She gave birth to the world. Just because she represents darkness in no way means that she is evil. She protects those she loves from the fears that dwell in darkness and will comfort those who are tired, stressed, or burdened. Nyx is in no way evil nor a plague. If you want to learn more about her, I wrote a post about Her in the Goddess/God section.

LOL! I find that very hard to believe, considering that when demons came into existence, they where blamed for EVERYTHING, which only served to slowly discredit the usage of alot these so called demons and devils. Incarnation? Right...I think it's a cry for ego.

But, that is only my own opinion. MINE I SAY!

From my understanding there are nine Orders of Angelic Choirs that the fallen angels fell from (according to Dionysius's system)

Seraphim
Cherubim
Thrones
Dominions
Virtues
Powers
Principalities
Archangels
Angels

From these 9 choirs they fell and later were organized by de Spina into 10 classes that were defined by the actions they took

Not to be a jerk but this post seems to be a complete cut and paste of this page

Who's Who in the Underworld

right down to the misspelling of Fortalitium fidei

If this is the original author can they footnote where they found the information on de Spina's classification?

I really just want to know more and am hoping for a better explanation.

Belzebuub / Beelzebub is said to have had evolved from his demoniac past in course of millennia to become a respectable teacher of occult wisdom. He was born Mark H. Pritchard. In his late teens or early twenties, he realized through the spiritual insight of the third eye that he is indeed the same as the biblical Beelzebub except that he has acquired new good & virtuous qualities and shedded old evil tendencies & propensities.

Apparently, but I know I can't. Do you know why? Because there are alot of "crazy fanatical" people now who resort to grandois ideas to get them the attention they want.

Where's the Jesus incarnate? Or Moses? What about St Peter? People have the balls to claim that they are devil incarnates, why not Holy Ones? It's just as blasphemous, rude and arrogant.

Then there is the Buddha incarnate. This is slightly different, because that one individual is not staking the claim, the masses are, and from the day he was born. He didn't suddenly come out one day when he was 18 and say "Hey! I'm the new Buddha!".

We are all Buddhas. Anyone claiming to be the 'one and only' incarnation of Buddha is missing the point and should not be taken at all seriously (imho), but I follow a stripped down Zen Buddhist philosophy so ymmv.

There are so many of these people claiming to be the incarnation of this or that uber powerful demon. It is all just roleplaying imho, they should sit down and play Vampire:TM in a dark room with all the other wannabes.

It seems a shame that people want to live these fantasy lives rather than experience the here and now reality. Of course it is a bit less exciting, but much more rewarding in the long run. Magick/Occult is full of fantasists. They can claim whatever they like but they only beguile those who cannot see truth from fiction.

That is very true! My sight varies on it though, I feel that we are all Goddess' and Gods in our own right, are Of Them.

The rest of what you said, hun...I applaud you! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ac42.gif) You seriously couldn't have said it any better. Bravo!

A person starts in any birth from where he left in his previous birth. To declare oneself as incarnation of this deity or that messiah is more a playing of fraud on oneself than on gullible populace. In the end such a person harms himself because he ends up going downhill.

Sorry, we don't start where we left off the last time, we start of as amnesiacs....It would be nice to start where one left off, but apparently shit just didn't work out that way....and even those of us who remember anything, will most likely never remember everything, and most of us won't recall even a hint up to the point of death.
Okay, so that was a less than perky though, how did we get to Buddah in a forum for Infernal spirits.....? Check that, how did Reincarnation even make it to a topic? nevermind...I've been working with angels for about 12 years, but havn't worked with demons so much, this sounds I'm sure like bit of an odd request, but anyone have a suggestion as to those that are a touch more human friendly than others? Or more to the point is there any in particular that pay to much attention to us and should be avoided? I'm always open to suggestions... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wizard.gif)

Only semi-related, but interesting none the less.

One time I stumbled across a geocities website of this woman named Dore who claimed to be the reincarnation of - get this - Jesus.

I don't know how common that is - but she personally damned me to hell. I feel so special.
I'd give anything to find that website again and see how funny it is now.

But in conclusion - anyone claiming to be any deity reincarnated is banananananananas! in my book.

I want to note that the Hierarchy of Demons changes and does not stay the same!

Where one demonolager states that Beezlebub is a crowned Prince for example, another Demonolager can state otherwise, but both could be correct; they have just communed with the spirits and held their stats from different "times", and changes DO occur in the Under/Netherworld as they do here with the presidents for example. Powers do change.

As above, so below.

This may also help:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lucifer

Lucifer's number is nine, nine being the number of pride as any number nine is multiplied into returns to itself. (Example: 9x5=45 - 4+5=9) Lucifer also being known as the "Angel of pride". This represents being proud of all things we do!

Lucifer's color is blue, blue being the color of the sky and water representing that Lucifer is all around and within us. That Lucifer is the prime element/energy that motivates and cultivates our world. Other colors Lucifer is associated with are white and silver, so accordingly altar pentagrams must be surrounded by blue with a silver/white pentagram with a black border (Shown on page ).

Lucifer's element is air, air being that which allows us to speak his words of truth as his manifestation on Earth.

Lucifer's direction is the east, east being where a lot of the sacred wisdom and the great wars will come from. It was once stated to me by a Germanic Luciferian that "a wise Magickian from Persia an Arab will come and bring with him the aeon of Lucifer" or in lay-mans terms the Antichrist.

Lucifer's human element is wisdom or applied knowledge, with time, study and practice it is believed that man can attain the Lucifer state, this only through applied knowledge or wisdom.

Lucifer's altar element is incense, incense being a representation of air, known to Luciferians as "sweet air".

Lucifer's planetary element is Venus, Lucifer being known as the morning star or first star of morning, otherwise known as Venus. Venus, known as the "Planet of love" represents the beauty of Lux Ferre (Latin for light bearer/bringer or Lucifer).

Lucifer's consort/Female aspect is Lilith, Lilith being the first wife of Adam before becoming the queen of the damned. It is said Lilith comes from the mud and the dust and is queen of the Succubi/Luciferic Witch. When Lucifer and Lilith mate they equal the androgynous being known as "Baphomet" or the "Goat of Mendes" also called "God of the Witches". Liliths number is two, also known as the number of the eternal female. Lilith is considered an equal to Lucifer to some, and the feminine aspect of Lucifer himself to others.

Lucifer's highest manifestation is through understanding of oneself, this being the goal of the Magickian/Luciferian to begin with, being as Lucifer himself, total awakening of the human god-form Lucifer. Without knowing the self one cannot hope to achieve any real understanding of anything else. Applied knowledge in action is a prime example of Lucifer's manifestation!

Satan

Satan's number is six, six being the number of "the beast" representing mans carnal nature being set free. Releasing the wolf within if you want to call it so. Sin no longer exists, nothing is sinful but to deny yourself of pleasure in your Utopia.

Satan's color is red, red being the color of emotion, Satan being the guardian of lust, anger, happiness, sadness etc…being released.

Satan's element is fire, fire being an appropriate representation of emotional outburst or ritual. Destruction and lust are the two prime elements of fire and Satan.

Satan's direction is south, south representing the dissension from God-hood to the ascension to God-hood. Creation of ones Utopia.

Satan's human element is anger, lust and primal emotion, representing the release of emotion through sex or anger and crushing of ones enemies.

Satan's altar element are the candles, Candles representing holding the flame of Satan or emotion, primal man.

Satan's planetary aspect is Mars, Mars being the planet that represents justice. Due to the biblical story of Satan punishing the sinners Satan was at times called the "Avenging Angel" or "Angel of Justice".

Satan's highest manifestation is through (wo)mans full release of the carnal will, self explanatory.

Leviathan

Leviathan's number is three, three being the number of Chaos as three can go into six and nine but doesn't have the stability of the number one.

Leviathan's color is blue, blue being the color of the wild oceans untamed, (wo)mans carnal side overcoming him/her, chaos.

Leviathan's element is water, water being that which our human forms are primarily created of. This represent the unity of matter and anti-matter, chaos and order, yin with yang.

Leviathan's direction is west, west being used to represent chaos and disorder.

Leviathan's human element is chaos, chaos meaning manifestation of order from the chaos of the nothing. No longer controlling ones actions, words etc… and not remembering fragments of time due to anger or lust are prime examples of this principal.

Leviathan's altar element is water, used in the chalice as a sacrament to or as Leviathan.

Leviathan's planet is man or microcosm, representing the bond between man and his own lost natural self.

Leviathan's highest manifestation comes from man realizing his own deification, Just as God can create and destroy so can we. Just as water is unpredictable and can be calm one moment and crashing another so are we. That's the gift of/from Leviathan!

Belial

Belial's number is one, one being the number that represents earth and remaining firm to ones convictions. Bullheadedness in a good way!

Belial's color is black, black being the color of the primordial chaos before the Earth. Most Luciferic sigils have black in them in some form representing the Earth.

Belial's element is Earth, Earth being the element that sustains humanity. The carnal laws of man are dictated by the laws of the Earth.

Belial's direction is north, north being the representation of constantly striving forward and upward changing and recreating our Utopia bigger and better.

Belial's human element is remaining firm to ones own beliefs, not dancing around in pools of religious feces. Finding a philosophy which is your own and sticking to it.

Belial's altar element is the incense coal, representing Earth and (Wo)mankind holding the flame of Lucifer.

Belial's planet is Earth, previously explained.

Belial's highest manifestation is through understanding and living the natural laws of our carnal self, self explanatory.

On the number of the beast. From my studies, I believe the hidden meaning of 666 is as follows. 6 is the number of imperfection, and also the number of man (7 is supposedly a divine number full of holiness). a triple will magnify any quality or property by threefold (or more- synergistic). Thus 666 is the number of supreme human rebellion, supreme imperfection. If Antichrist is a personification of the worse in humanity, and will lead humanity to it's greatest debacle and rebellion, then it makes complete sense. 9 is also associated with 666 by the way.
