I've been having this problem that keeps comming up. Lets say you place a spell on someone that lives off from a distant away. Like a letter spell. How do you know your spell has worked or not?

What is the specific spell that is being cast on the distant person? Some effects would be obvious if you are interacting with the person while others would not be.

Greetings!
I'm not pulling your leg...
The ONLY way to look at spell casting is to KNOW that it worked! To try and guess is self defeating. Never perform a spell casting with the idea that it 'might' work.
It worked.
of course.

This is merely my opinion. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bigwink.gif)

Hey Ashnook nice to see you around (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Lets for example say it was a hex (not that I would advocate it or anything like that (IMG:style_emoticons/default/fie.gif) ) .

Although I think I would prefer sending a love spell on someone I met on MySpace more than anything else.

I think bym pinned the tail on the donkey on this one. If you did cast a spell that would draw a particular person to you then you'd know it worked if they become more drawn to you. Though personally I wouldn't advocate "love" spells any more than hexes.

For example these scenarios:
Lets say for example someone has been going around town vandalizing various properties around the neighbourhood and your home was vandalize. So you decided to put a binding spell on this vandal to stop him but you havnt a clue (presuming) wether it has worked or not. (For all you know the person could have just gone to a another neighbourhood.)

Or Lets say someone has been going around neighbourhood poisoning people's dogs with tainted food and you really wanted to nail this guy?

Or say someone broke into your locker but you dont know who done it .... etc.

Or dealing with bad ebay sellers who ripped you off (speaking from personal experience. really gets me mad)

How would one tell if the spell has worked?

(btw Hi Acid nice to see you around! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )

Actually that wasn't the point that I was trying to make. When spellcsating it is essential to believe that the spell you are casting will work. If you leave yourself the wiggleroom to have doubts or questions of the spelld effectiveness you are then shortcircuited the spell. You must know whilst the spell is cast that it will be effective. This involves the use of a certain kind of mindset. Build the image of your desire, raise power, focus the power through the desire and FIRE! If you doubt your effectiveness then you uncover a serious source of failure in your spell. FIRE and then forget it. Let the magic do its stuff. It can't do its stuff with you poking and prodding it. That will drain its strength that was hampered by your doubt. I can't articulate it better than that at this present moment. This is an OPINION...of course, you must make up your own mind. I can understand the frustration in this. Its like not thinking of the colour blue... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hey jen some spells you can tell if they've worked or not because you can actually notice the change. However its important to not intentionally seek out the change of your spells. Just let it happen while going about you're normal life. If you don't, you might end up trying to find "evidence" that it has or has not worked and once that happens it'll be very hard to tell what to believe as some events may indicate that the spell worked and some may indicate is has not. If a spell does create a noticable change it will be obvious. ANother reason why one shouldn't dwell on the outcome of there spells is, theoretically speaking, a spell works on its own and it cannot work on its own if the caster is constantly thinking about. If one doesn't not let it go then it cannot work on its own because the energy that created it has not been totally released. Instead it does nothing and one is left just wondering about it.

Another take to bym's idea is this: Consider casting a spell a direct action with a direct affect. Its not much different than turning the ignition to your car (assuming it is reliable of course) or turning on the burner to your stove or commanding your body to walk or reaching out with your fist and tapping someone on the nose. The only difference between spells and regular actions is that spells are considered "magickal". If you can believe your spells are as real as your mundane actions in life then there's no reason to question if they will work or not. They will do someting.

Thanks Acid. I'm definatly not going to dwell on any outcome of spells then.
