I must thank the gods before hand for allowing me to come across such a fountain of knowledge. Tlazocamati. (thank you in the "aztec" language of nahuatl). Anyhow, I just read through all the topic discussions in this forum and I got to thinking...is the left-hand path something of european origin or could it be that it exists/existed in other cultures by other names? For example...in the tonalpohualli ("aztec" calendar) the ornaments of "chalchihuites (precious)" were made of jade plates having five perforations and were attached by means of red leather thongs, and feather tips ending in pearl. This being one of the most magnificent ornaments meaning: light, strenght, and beauty. It seems to me that LHP stresses heavily on these three: light, strenght, and beauty as meaning knowledge/wisdom, inner/outer strenght, and beauty/divinity. Could this be? The calender also traced the path of "lucifer" "the bright morning star", yes, venus, in the form of a pentagram across the face of tonatiuh (the sun deity, the one in the middle of the calendar with his tongue pierced). These are just two examples I can think of right from the top but Im sure there are dozens. I have come to beleave that the mexicatl (aztecs) had something in common with the greeks, romans, and egyptians as far as herbs, natural magic, and certain symbols were concerned. (I hope I am not offending anyone). Further, during and after the spanish conquest the libraries burned to the ground contained a wealth of knowledge that...could have made a difference. By LHP in mexico I mean Teloloapan (a small town in the State of Guerrero, yes, home to Acapulco. 4hrs away). Here, peoples beliefs seem to be so strange and so rooted in christianity that many choose not to name their child "Jenifer" because in has the letters "fer", short for LUCIFER. Strange huh!? (what the f%*!!?). Guess what...my first name is Fermin. LHP captures my fancy as do many things on this site. My question is...apart from LHP being european...what books would you recommend for someone such as myself who has an unending thirst for knowledge? I would love to learn more about LHP. If you know of any PDF files or anything else I can download. Or a good list of books. Reason being...I live in Teloloapan and the nearest bad ass bookstore would be in Mexico City about 4hrs away or I could settle for Cuernavaca abou 3hrs. Thanks.

edit: P.S. If I can find them in Englisht. lol

Just a minor point:

The notion of "Left-hand Path" originates not in Europe, but in the Vedic traditions, where it has different denotations and connotations from the ones you are likely to find on internet forums for the discussion of Western magical systems. The incorporation of the term into the language of the Western systems is (as far as I know) down to the likes of Blavatsky, who failed to understand it within its original Eastern cultural context and thus utilised it incorrectly to illustrate some of her own somewhat whacko ideologies.

I suspect that there are members here who are knowledgeable in the area of Tantra that can expand upon this for you. My personal opinion though is that, if you are interested in Left-hand Path philosophies and practices, then you should probably make an effort to discover the history of the term and its original meanings.

Here is a Wikipedia link that might be useful for starters (note that I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information as I am not an expert in these things...although it seems I was right about the Blavatsky influence).

I Thank you J´S. I followed the white rabbit (the link lol) and stumbled upon something of the most interesting nature. According to the article LHP is in fact Eastern in origin, the fascinating part is that I failed to make the connection. I say this because I have done some reading on Buddhism, which included the origins of Buddhism...some books begin with the aryan migration into the northern regions of India (other scholars disagree), the vedas...anyhow...I failed to see the connection and I thank you for the insight. So if LHP isnt a European concept...could there be some kind (if distant) connection between ancient civilizations...LHP...India, Greece, Egypt, Tenochtitlan? Wishful thinking? What books, if any, would you recommend?

I'm afraid the Eastern systems really aren't my thing, as I said, I was hoping that someone else with a bit more knowledge would jump in and provide you with some more information! You are probably better equipped to make educated speculations on this issue than I am.

That said, I will pitch in my two cents!

I think it unlikely that there would be a "Left-hand Path" per se, the transmission of which could be traced through migratory patterns. This is because, as I understand it, the concept is closely tied to the caste system. As far as I know this system developed in India and was not imported. Also, since the cultures of Egypt, Greece and other big players in the classical/ancient world were so different from that culture which derives from the caste system, I think that the Left-hand/Right-hand distinction in Tantra would simply not be relevant in the same way if it had found its way into those countries.

Sorry I can't add any suggestions for further reading, but if you scour the internet I am sure you will find some good stuff. People in the West seem to assume that Tantra=Sex, but as I am sure you are discovering, there is a lot more to it than that. I do know a Tantrika who has recently joined our Order, so when I next see her I will try to remember to ask her what she would recommend in terms of learning about how Tantra is practised in the East.
