I finally got hold of a copy of The Goetia of Dr Rudd after waiting many moons for its publication. As I had expected, it is a fascinating book, but one aspect has particularly tickled my fancy. Never having owned Peterson's edition of the Lemegeton I had never before encountered the book of the Pauline Art. Fortunately it is included in this new volume.

Looking over it the other night whilst lounging on the couch I was immediately struck by how incredibly easy to operate that particular grimoire would be. Apparently it was very popular during the 70s, but has since fallen out of fashion, and I have never heard of anyone making use of it. I am curious to know if any members here have ever made an attempt to operate it, and if so, whether or not they encountered any unexpected issues which could be planned for and prepared against in advance?

Both myself and my friend were sufficiently intrigued that we will almost certainly try and operate it at some point, so forewarned is forearmed and all that!

Damn! I ordered mine months ago too, but it got lost in the mail! I spent 80 bucks on that...the tracking website is from thailand too, and it's no good.

Tell me, does the system make sense, to use the shemha angels with the goetics??? Are there good details about the psalms for the angels, and their seals?

How easy is it to understand the pauline art, for a novice in astrology I mean?

Is there any other new information aside from co-relation to Shem angels in this book? Or is it otherwise identical (at least for part I - Goetia) to other published versions?

Thanks,

-T.V.

Well, I have not read the Peterson version, which they say themselves is the definitive version thus far for whichever manuscript it is based on. In this they look at how the Goetia was probably actually practised by the Elizabethan "Angel Magicians". All of Rudd's papers are reproduced with the exception of the Notoria, and they include excerpts from other manuscripts of a similar period that belonged to other magicians in the appendices for comparative purposes. Since my main copy of the Goetia was the Mathers edition for reference and a De Lawrence version for practice (because it is small and handy for the temple) I have found it it to be very useful, and one could certainly construct an approach to Goetic operations based on the material which would differ in several ways from approaches based on the Mathers edition.

They have included a lot of correspondence tables in the appendices, either new ones or ones taken from the excellent Complete Magicians Tables. These help to increase the ease of use for the old manuscript material that is reproduced. They have also corrected some of the inconsistencies in attributions in the material which were probably introduced by copyist's errors, but when they do this they always include the original text too so the reader can make up their own mind whether or not the corrections are an improvement. There is a cogent argument as to the validity of Rudd's work with the Shem angels, and it would certainly be possible for a reasonably competent magician to make use of this approach from the information provided. There is also lots of information on the possible relationships between the Lemegeton and other grimoires, particularly the Heptameron, and this becomes important in terms of such things as the construction of the circle; again this differs a lot from the construction in other published versions, with extra consecrations etc as well.

The Pauline Art is very easy to understand. There is essentially only one basic astrological calculations required before one can get down to work on the ritual. It is the kind of thing that might take half an hour if you are doing it with pen and paper, but nowadays there is the joy of the internet. I have a program on my computer that would give me the information I needed with one click! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

My housemate doesn't understand astrology, but I explained the relevant concept to him in 2 minutes using the coffee table as a "flat-earth" and getting him to imagine the circle of the zodiac moving around it. It is simple stuff.

Flat or oblately spheroid, the zodiac still encircles the world. Use it while you can: in a few thousand years all the stars will have moved out of position.

For the sake of curiosity, I used a sunrise calculator to determine the time of sunrise on March 10th 1641 (the date given in the Lemegeton as the basis for the sigils in Pauline Art), then cast a chart for that time under the assumption that it was made in England.

The Ascendant was in Aries, and the Ruling Planet of Aries (the Lord of the Ascendant) is Mars. The sign ascending upon the 12th house is Aquarius. The seal given for this first hour of the day has Mars and Aquarius in the center. I hope this makes clear any confusion regarding the method of making the seals. It is quite apparent that the editor of my copy (Wade Long) had no idea what to do with the astrological directions, and it's likely others are also confused. Gotta love modern technology.
