As some of you may know I have been involved in an ongoing set of experiments to see if one can communicate with someone else via the astral. The idea was brought up in this thread where it started as lucid dreaming and turned into astral projecting. That was almost five mounts ago now and things are becoming interesting. A detailed log of our activities can be found in my blog, but I have compiled the data gathered and I decided I should present it here with a note to what it means. I must apologize for the format, it was a lot nicer in Excel, but alias I can not load that format.

The parameters for the experiment differ from run to run but the basics have remained the same: each picks a sign and show/transmit it to the other, do not tell anyone what is being shown. Anything reliable has been hard won, and we have not even gotten past simple signs. As the data show, the execution is not as simple as it may seem. Several connections- a presents and a familiarity with each other and the meeting place- needed to be made before anything interesting happened.

Attempts where made to keep it as objective as possible, yet it is for from scientific. Neither party will divulge the sign until the other got right. However, any parts or aspects of the sign that where correct where acknowledged, as where when the sign was wrong, but nothing about what was wrong was mentioned. (With the single exception when it was felt that one had become too reliant on one view and it was hindering progress.) This methodology has a few faults; most obvious among them is the possibility that the signs could be guest by process of elimination. This is easily fixed by a moderator to receive and judge the descriptions of the signs- and not to communicate anything about the experiment to the participants. The next flaw is that the current methodology does not test for false-positives. That is to say one party thinks that something has happen when they have not made contact, they are basically seeing/remembering what they want to see/remember. Also, a false-positive could occur in the astral when the astral material manifests what one expects to see. On this last point a good amount of progress has been made to limit the influence. Edunpanna has suggested finding the source of image, if one cannot be found then it is the astral conforming to exceptions.

The data I was able to gather consisted of Run (the first 18 runs of the experiment are shown- data concerning me is listed as 1 and Vagrant Dreamer as 2.) Time Spent In Astral (Shown in minutes) - is next, then Variances shown as percent of the received sign that overlies the sign sent when placed over top of each other. There is a three to five percent error rate using this method, but it is the best I have come up with thus far. Next comes Effectiveness given in a scale of 0-10 where 0 is no contact whatsoever and 10 is perfect description of the sign as if it where given in person. Data concerning myself has been checked by Vagrant Dreamer and approved to the best of his ability that it is accurate.

The first piece of useful knowledge gained from the chart concerned accuracy vs. time in astral. The times are approximate so a margin of plus or minus five minutes was given to measurements. Then an average was taken from the two participants for each run and compared to the average Effectiveness to get the average time over the average Effectiveness. When this number is looked at for sets of runs (three to a set) it becomes clear that 12 minutes with a margin of plus or minus five minutes is the threshold after which effectiveness diminishes. The routine- at least on my end- has changed accordingly. This only covers the first 18 runs, currently we are at 21, and there is no reason to expect we will be finished anytime soon, so as more data is gathered it will become clearer how recent changes impact the results.

Any other implications are at this point speculation and need not be commented on at this time. At the moment it is only an interesting curiosity but Vagrant Dreamer has suggested it “could become a basis for developing a better approach to astral projection and/or telepathic or empathic communication.” I happen to agree. Yet being reserved and studious, I will hold out on that judgment until a larger more refined study is conducted.
