There are billions of different ways humans can communicate and we're somewhat limited beings. Gods/spirits/floaty-invisible-people surely have incomprehensibly more ways of communicating than we do. Though I'm willing to bet sandwich section syntax and mud puddle ripple symbols probably aren't used by anyone.

Well then is there also the problem of being "capable" of differenciating the difference between your own thoughts and that of whoever your calling?
Wouldn't the first step be to foster a belief system, around a type of communication, that would allow you to accept information received through it as genuine (not just your imagination)? Even if you did all sorts of rituals to the letter, what would matter if you didn't believe it was anything but stray thoughts?
I attended a class where the instructor claimed it was possible to "telepathically" talk with anyone, anywhere, anytime, etc. as long as the specifics were imagined exactly, the communication was clearly started + stopped, and doubt held in check until finished. They even suggested that it didn't matter if the person were fictional or not, being that who we think we are is essentially fictional. My ego strongly contests this... but it also insists it's good at Poker (which it isn't).

Wonder why peoples of the old world relied on the priest/priestesses of a particular deity for communion and blessing with those beings?
