Everyman! Just make a work of fiction you can feel proud of. You will find your characters, places and events start to take on a life of their own. It does not always happen, but if you keep an intent to do so (or no intent) throughout the process, there is a good chance. And you do not have to be particularly creative either, plagiarize history, try your hand at someone else's incomplete fictional universe; it all depends on how much you want to do.
Separate is easy enough, imagining your new creation has no ties to anything but your imagination, while getting past your thoughts on just how much... thoughts can affect the world is tend to be tough. Generally speaking, the closest you can get is an astral tour of your newly made locale; or if it becomes popular, rampant fans mimicking your characters (much more disturbing than when it's someone else's). And anyone can see the effect of Sherlock Holmes or StarWars on the world, such fans as Trekkies and Otakus; there's even books on the subject, like The 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived.

Or, if you're more technologically minded, you could make a virtual environment with it's own simplistic physics and digital life-forms. There's plenty of programs, programming books, and simulations already. Sure, that's not exactly an equivalent (yet); but it's here, it's possible, and one day with faster processors, it may be indiscernible from the rest of reality.

I actually do graphic design and game design. There is an engine named blender and its awsome. You can create such things such as gravity, force, and all types of different things. Seeker, I think what you are talking about is a hyper sigil. If I recall correctly, it is normally a creative work that is huge. Instead of having one simple sigil, imagine having an entire book filled with them. Have that and have alot of people reading them. You can design a new reality via 3D design or the astral. If there is a way to create a whole new world, let me know. Can't wait till be called a god of my own world, J/K. That is one of the joys that I get out of painting, drawing, and programming. I get to make a world of my own that goes by my rules. Hey, who is to say that we actually aren't the 3D sprites in a computer generated world ruled by some computer geek (I sound like a Matrix promoter).

Here is information on Blender if anyone is interested...

I think everyone has that secret wish to create their own little world where everything goes just like we want it. Imagine it for a second. Ahhhhh, yes, the perfect world. A utopia created by your desires. I don't think it has ever been done before. The astral is just a bunch of thought forms, so if you create an elaborate little story or diagram, the thoughtforms would be there. When you astraled, you could be there.

Blender is an integrated suite of tools enabling the creation of a broad range of 3D content with the singular benefits of cross-platform interoperability and an incredibly small download file size. It is the most popular Open Source 3D graphics application in the world, and is one of the most downloaded.

Aimed world-wide at media professionals and artists, Blender can be used to create 3D visualizations, stills as well as broadcast and cinema quality video, while the incorporation of a real-time 3D engine allows for the creation of 3D interactive content for stand-alone playback.

I might be out of topic, but just to reply i also am analyst programmer at MSc level..

but even though i did Multimedia for my BSc, i still can get virtual reality to be like Astral. the Astral is nothing that you expect to see. It just constructs of itself. whereas virtual reality, even if it seems realistic, it is still predictable.
