If you decide you can swim by flopping aound, and put that to the test, don't be shocked when you sink. It would be better to float, and better yet to learn a simple method of swimming. Right now you are on the water's egde, and you have those three options.

Some people find it helpful to lay out several positions for different aspects of the question, and several (three is easy) cards for each of those positions. This gives the cards context.

For example, if you have a project in mind and want insight, you might lay out one set of three cards for what obstacles you face, another for what resources you have at your disposal, and another for what you gain by completion of the project.

In each section there are three cards, so for the first position instead of merely "The Hermit" which might be very obscure, you might also find the 7 of Swords and the Five of Pentacles. The Hermit alone could give you some part of the answer, but the addition of the 7 and the 5 add clarification. In the case of the example given, where the position represents obstacles, it might indicate trouble arising from being "on one's own" without extra money and with unrealistic aspirations.

It may be helpful to build on the positions as shown. You might lay yet another card across each place, seeking resolution. If in the example you were to find the 6 of Wands covering the position, you could take it to mean that your obstacles could be overcome, and that you could seek out things that you can be certain of achieving.

This example is purely random, I do not mean it to apply to you or anyone, it is merely an illustration of the method.

Most importantly, pick a method of Tarot and use it frequently and consistently. Give readings for others (free of charge is best IMO) and use those opportunities to refine your skills.

i already use 2 seperate methods of tarrot readings that are used for magic and non-magic divinations respectively.

but your method sounds pretty interesting...

however i have a problem with it in that i dont understand the minor arcana at all.

i can tell that pentacle represents earth, wands fire etc etc

but nothing more. i just cant find any reference books.

You must not be looking.

Try Waite's Pictorial Key to the Tarot, Crowley's Book of Thoth, the "Book T" section of the Golden Dawn, Qabalistic Tarot by Wang, or the little books that come with most new decks.

There's such a wealth of information on the tarot, you would be hard pressed to miss any of it looking into the area of magic. There's a plethora of written material, I suggest searching on amazon first (joan bunnings books are very good, and she has a website with much of the material on there), there's internet forums dedicated to tarot, such as aeclectic tarot, aswell as a vast number of websites. Additionally many books on magic have some section on tarot etc. I found the small booklets that accompany a tarot deck pretty unusable if beginning to study the subject, but seriously you have a computer do some searching, or visit your local bookstore.
