Chapter V from Crowley's Magick in Theory and Practice The Formula of I.A.O.

My English is not "that" good and I have trouble comprehending this one so can anyone care to summarise what is this chapter all about in simple everyday English please?

Briefly, I was told that it's about death, and rebirth before achieving the result of a working - probably one of the applications of the IAO formula (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused012.gif)

a few applications of the formula may explain what i understand the formula to be:

in experience
I- Innocence
A- Knowledge
O- Wisdom

in alchemy
I- Prima Materia
A- Solve (Dissolving)
O- Coagula (Rebuilding)

in relation to botany (and the 3 fathers?)
I- Bud
A-Flower
O-Seed

in initiation
I- Ego
A- Adversary
O-Growth

it is one of the most general formuli (perhaps underlying all others) and we encounter it every moment of every day.

I also can see a connection between the shapes of the letters I-Hadit (the sacrifice of the father's wand), O-Nuit (the fulfillment of the mother's cup) and A-RaHoorKhuit (the child of thier ecstasy).

It is also:

I Isis
A Aponphis (spelling sorry)
O Osiris

Bascially the modern day interpertation is growth, death, and resurrection as something greater than before.

It is also listed in the Chaldean oracles as a Phonecian name for God and the gnostics held it was the highest name for god.

There is also an excellent article in the Journal of Western Mystery Tradition by Alex Summers that links IAO to the middle pillar through the hexagram.

It has far more implications. That only years of study will gleam for you and would be impossibe to put into words even if I did fully understand it myself.
