Well, I just loved Man of Steel. He's not the Superman that wears his red underpants on the outside, saves kittens from trees, or gives speeches about truth, justice, and the american way anymore, thank god, but he still has that humble, friendly, american charm about him, and was raised with christian values. He is in every way incorruptible, and yet immensely powerful. And yes, I love the fact that he punches bad guys through buildings. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It's unfortunate though that Kal-El (hebrew for 'voice of God') is portrayed as a symbol of faith and free will, while Zod and Faora are portrayed as symbols of evolution and determinism. With Superman beating them it's saying that faith is somehow more powerful than evolution; an unacceptable statement. I think the writers did that to appeal to their christian audience, but they probably offended atheists and agnostics, who simply won't be able to route for Superman because of that.

Regardless of that, in many ways Superman represents the pinnacle of evolution; not just in power and character, but also in consciousness. I wonder if they'll ever get to the more mystical aspects of Superman in the films, although they might be very difficult to portray. To give you an idea, I found an article on runesoup.com that had this to say:

"In All Star Superman, Lex Luthor ultimately comes undone because when he assumes Superman’s power he also gets his senses… his ability to perceive the universe… down to subatomic levels, across dimensions… Luthor perceived that we are one unifying whole. His toxicity and rage couldn’t stand in the light of that Knowing… that Gnosis."

And yes, I know I'm a total geek.

What did you think of the film?

One of Superman's weakness is magic and he's far from incorruptible as he kills Zod at the end. He is one of my favorite comic characters. Like popular comic characters who have been around a long time, he is subject to various incarnations by various authors. I took this face value. Although I think your intepretation is mistaken, perhaps you weren't paying attention to the plot. Kryptonians where they're role is predetermined and grown vs Superman who's natural born.

I suppose that depends on how one defines incorruptible (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

My interpretation was about what was happening at a more abstract level. Kal is portrayed as a symbol of christian faith whereas Faora is portrayed as a symbol of amoral evolution. So, abstractly, faith is fighting evolution and winning, a non-sense idea. Like I said in the previous post, I think the writers wanted to please the christian audience by symbolically having the christian faith beat atheist/agnostic beliefs about evolution. I think I didn't articulate myself very well. I actually regret having started this thread; I feel like such a fruitcake now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/face06.gif)

Peace.
