My own thoughts on this is that those that have developed enough in meditation etc will have some mediumship or other skills, but mostly, I would think they are concentrating on following the words and actions and other requirements of the ritual.
Although when I used to go to Mass, we did have one priest that during the quieter weekdays would lead a time of quiet reflection and I believe that that was when those of us with any kind of spiritual development would have the opportunity to connect.
The most likely time if we are talking about public ritual, would have been during exposition when the blessed sacrament would be put into a monstrance and we would have an hour of quiet - I certainly experienced the other side during those times and no doubt many others did too.
