I am naive in this field but I have seen some diviners dowsing to a breath-taking accuracy. For example, there are persons who would dowse on a map with a pendulum and the pendulum would vibrate at the exact spot-point below which water or the treasure is there and they will tell at what exact depth the desired thing can be found.

One thing about dowsing....it either will work for you or it won't. There are different forms of dowsing which get variable results in the hands of the dowser. Using a forked stick will work for some and not others, the same being true for the use of pendulums or coathanger wire...
Another note of interest...water witching/dowsing commanded a chapter in the USA Army Field Guide for WW I ! It is one of the more publically honored/respected divining systems in the world today. As I've said earlier, it usually boils down to whether you can or can't divine. It's likened unto a genetic trait., like being able to 'rolling' your tongue! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
