The spirits appear clearly and solidly, as much as your cat or your furniture. Their voices are plain and clear as well, audible as any other conversation. There is no visualizing, no mirror-gazing, no hallucinogens, and nothing else to allow a bit of uncertainty that the things are in fact present. Why does this work? It is one of the greater mysteries of the occult.
Arguments to the effect that the ceremonies produce some form of altered state from which psychological inner-demons exteriorize fall short on the matter of spirit appearances. The ceremony is simply not that taxing, there are no trance-induction methods etc.. To suggest such a dramatic psychotic break arising from speaking a few lines while dressed up funny is as contrary to psychological theory as is the ordinary explanation of real spirits answering magical ceremonies.
The spirits will often appear with a gesture to herald their presence initially, at which point the Address is given and the spirit is compelled to adopt the form of its office. Whether this reflects its "true" form is debatable, but it is a necessary sign of submission and to fail in accepting the homage can lead to allowance of failure in the spirit's tasks.
I do not know of any videos or photographs of any sort of spirit. I have seen some especially bad attempts at this, and I have seen many earnest attempts with vague swirls of light and color that "almost look like something, if you squint." I have seen these abysmal-quality pictures come from even respected occultists, and it ought to be said that the real appearance of the spirits is far more disturbing than any little globe of light, and actually a lot more like Hollywood than is commonly suggested.
