@Imperial Arts: they don't always appear solid and real, at least for me. For me, they often appear almost like a TV signal out of phase, where they start to 'break up' and then re-form. That having been said, I also know they're there, I can feel them, and what I ask gets done, so the way they appear isn't all that important to me.
@Lord 32: best thing to do is concentrate on the spirit you want, and then summon it, repeatedly over a period of days if necessary. Most of the traditional descriptions are pretty close, some aren't, and the best thing to do is see what pops out of the ether. Remember, if these entities take a form too disturbing for you, you can always command them into human shape. I usually don't, but I also don't have a problem with talking cranes, lions, and dragons either. *shrug*
