I am not sure if this will make any sense, but I am thinking about Lord of the Flies, where a sensible young lad starts to lead a group of boys on an island where their plane has crashed; eventually, people started to disagree with him and there were jealousies and ego battles and so on. The group started to split into little divisions and violence erupted and the leader was persecuted.
It leads me to think that the 'adults' can sometimes only be as grown up as the people tugging on their skirts or trousers will allow; too many tugs and the person is overthrown.
In other words, you can only be as mature about something as the less mature in mind can understand. There is no point in giving an encyclopaedia to toddler.
