It sounds like you have done some scrying before, so I’ll skip the intro. There are no real differences between a crystal ball, and a bowl of ink, or a mirror. They all have the same idea; to look “through” the crystal ball, mirror, exc. at the image inside in much the same way as you’d view a “magic eye” picture. Rather than concentrating on the images, look past the cloudiness that will most always occur, until the haze clears.
As to backings and candles, that is up to you, and the desired out come. Personally, I like to darken the room when I am scrying- no mater what method I use. This has two useful functions. First, it makes slipping in to proper frame of mind easer and two it cuts back on glare, which reeks havoc with this sort of thing. Glare is also the reason why I do not use candles when I am scrying, but they do help some people with creating images. Again, it is a personal choice.
One thing that is often helpful with a new ball is to become acquainted with it. Try holding it before you start, or even naming it. Using a crystal ball crystal ball is- like any magical tool- a personal thing; as such, it is a good idea to find one that, for lack of a better description, speaks to you. Keep it free of nicks and chips, and you should be fine.
