I am sure if you are a good enough hypnotist you can get it to work on anyone. It is kind of frightening. It doesn't seem to have any purpose other than a typical Ericksonian joke hypnotists (especially Brown) are fond of. When he talks about the ring, you hear a ring. Ha ha. The effect itself was very simple. He took an easily hypnotizable subject and used arm catalepsy to get trance. After that he just had to stay in character.
