Now, I have given this a decent amount of thought, and from my experiences Gods and spirits wil come and go of there own regard. So how do you come into contact? Complicated rituals to build you personal calling power seem to be prequisite. Then another more personalized set to focus on the energy of the being. Well then is there also the problem of being "capable" of differenciating the difference between your own thoughts and that of whoever your calling? I'd say that you would notice the difference, but there are also less agressive creatrues that you may never notice are whispering at you.

Maybe it has to do with my level of perception. Or maybe I'm romanticizing the idea of playing with spirits but I would love to learn more, even if it is as simple as contacting what people call "guides" Although I found it easier to listen to one that belonged to another, than trying to "hear" my own.

Advice perhaps?

try, try, and try again. Basically, you can just light a candle every day to the god of your choice, and pray. Keep it in your thoughts, and do things you think that god would approve of, then pray before you go to bed. In your dreams, you'll see it eventually. Maybe it won't be exactly as you expected. Maybe it'll be more or less animalistic. Maybe it will have a look to it that is very non god-like. It might be just a begger in the street (in real life, or your dreams), and it's a test to see if you are worthy of meeting the god in person. This has happened to me, and to many others, especially saints in the catholic-christian faith. Be prepared for it, because even if you fail for a couple years, eventually it'll just click and come together.

Altpath gives good advice, devotion is the element of our consciousness that is magnetic to the concept of divinity and God-forms.

Another thing you might consider is to embody the qualities of said deity as much as possible. Understand what they represent - they are idealized human images, essentially; the perfect warrior, the perfect mother, the perfect whatever - and what qualities they embody. Doing this polarized your personality and character towards the deity in question, and they will be more likely to appear for conversation, instruction, etc. It is a form of passive invocation, after a fashion, but is also a good ritual for summoning a deity - take the week before the ritual proper to embody that being, and then when you do the summoning, calling, invocation, etc., they will be more 'in line' with your consciousness and more likely to react to your entreaty.

Wonder why peoples of the old world relied on the priest/priestesses of a particular deity for communion and blessing with those beings? There you go. Of course, it all used to be a mystery to the average individual, these days you can go to any exceptional forum on the web and find this stuff out. Shame what the worlds come to, eh? There are billions of different ways humans can communicate and we're somewhat limited beings. Gods/spirits/floaty-invisible-people surely have incomprehensibly more ways of communicating than we do. Though I'm willing to bet sandwich section syntax and mud puddle ripple symbols probably aren't used by anyone.

Wouldn't the first step be to foster a belief system, around a type of communication, that would allow you to accept information received through it as genuine (not just your imagination)? Even if you did all sorts of rituals to the letter, what would matter if you didn't believe it was anything but stray thoughts?
I attended a class where the instructor claimed it was possible to "telepathically" talk with anyone, anywhere, anytime, etc. as long as the specifics were imagined exactly, the communication was clearly started + stopped, and doubt held in check until finished. They even suggested that it didn't matter if the person were fictional or not, being that who we think we are is essentially fictional. My ego strongly contests this... but it also insists it's good at Poker (which it isn't).

Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes

Religion did not always function as it functions in recent centuries. There was a time when people took their gods and the rituals that appeased them, and established their communion, far more seriously in regard to their every day lives. Their gods lived among them, not up on high beyond the edge of creation as the average monotheistic deity typically does. What I meant to imply, was that the priesthood of those ancient gods lived lives that were the epitome of their patron deity's paradigm and governance. They communed with their gods in a very real way, for the benefit of their followers.

On the subject of modern day religions, i'm inclined to agree.

I would say that a far more reliable method of recognizing the 'reality' of communication would be to learn to control your own thoughts. When I speak with any entity, there's no doubt in my mind who is talking - I can spend ten minutes without a single stray thought with confidence and know that whatever thoughts do enter into my mind are communications, not random imaginings. No matter what belief system you foster, telepathic communication relies on your ability to distinguish native thoughts from foreign ones.

That said, there are more concrete methods of communication - oracle or tarot cards, various kinds of 'thrown' symbols (runes, ogham, i-ching, bones) and such like.
