The Key says it's all necessary, every little bit. It also says that you will be cursed if you profane the art by using it for evil purposes.

On the first point, the Key itself seems to dispute the idea that the whole ceremony must be performed exactly like and including every pice of material from the book. There are numerous different conjurations addressing a variety of distinctly different types of spirits, and these conjurations are different in the various manuscript editions. Some of these also add or subtract a significant amount of material. The design of the Pentacles also differs.

For example the Pentacle of the Sun for invisibility is presented as effective on its own, whereas certain editions also give a conjuration of Almiras, Master of Invisibility as a necessary preamble to the act of doing invisibility-related magic. Is this meant to include the pentacle's conjuration?

I think that it's important that the ceremony be "complete" but I don't believe it is important to do every single thing in the book. There is one description of the Circle to be made with the daggers: cut a cord with the White knife, trace a barrier with the Black knife, and hold a central point with whatever sort of blade you choose. The book gives a variety of weapons and tools as examples of the central blade, but you could choose any of them and do not need to make them all. If you can afford it, or are allowed to own it, you could use a sword instead of these knives and avoid their bloody consecration altogether. The rite for drawing a Circle with the Sword is given as a separate entry in the book, and it would be impractical to do both. So you need to have the Circle, but you can choose which way you want to do it and that will determine the kind of tools and rituals you will need.

I advise you to study the book, and to make a schedule of practice. You will discover that you cannot follow the book from page 1 to the end and actually get anything done in the ordinary sense, much less to have an effective conjuration. There is a special order to the ceremonies that is very obscure but comes to light when you actually sit down and plan out what you're going to do over the space of nine days. You'll need the three toward the end to be the least busy, but you can probably get the rest done while keeping a job and daily routines. Pay special attention to the fact that everything has to be consecrated.

If anyone is interested, I have a blank workbook for the Key of Solomon. On one side of the page it has a printed text with the incantations to be said, and a very basic instruction regarding the necessary steps, and on the facing page it has an illustration of the actions to be performed at that step. I photocopied it blank so that someone could go through and copy into the facing pages all the words and sigils using the Pen and Ink of Art, using the printed pages as a guide and using the illustrations to help in performing the ceremonies. All the pentacles are drawn as blank outlines to be colored-in, and the words are all left off so that they can be written in by hand with the consecrated materials.
