The only real way I could ever manage to astral project is in a state of "mentally rested exhaustion" akin to what is considered to be a Lucid Dream Issue: "wake-back-to-sleep method."
Apparently, during random nights, I will wake up at around 2:30 AM (EST, I live in that zone), and then go back to sleep anywhere from 3:00 to 4:45 AM. At this time, I relapse into sleep in a mentally exhausted state, and thus sleep more restfully. During this stage of my sleep, I then feel my body have a strange displacement feeling, while my mind has an ambivalent, transient mood of "Whatever. I'm so tired. I'm too tired to think. Goodnight." But, because I had awoken, and my sleep cycle readjusted, a certain alertness on another level was retained. This readjustment then caused the displacement, and I slowly "seeped" into a realm intermediary between the astral and the mundane. At that point, I used a prompt I learned in Journeys Outside the Body...
"I will now astral project!"
A galvanization occured. But it wasn't sufficient.
"Focus now!"
I attained a greater level of astral integrity, but it wasn't enough.
"Clarity now!"
....at that point there is a blank in my memory. I don't think I left fast enough for the brain exhaustion not to affect me.
