Would it be really uncool for me to use some art work from a book for an avatar?

Depends on the author.
If it would be me i wouldnt care less.
Usually things are copy righted to make sure to earn money is it possible he/she would loose money because you have used his/her art as your avatar?
I seriusly doubt it. But hey i care less about copyrights the cat crap in my neighbours back yard is more intresting.
