Would it be really uncool for me to use some art work from a book for an avatar?

I think it's covered under the 'fair use' clause. Basically it means don't make money from it and don't pass it off as your own. If you look through the avatar gallery, there are all sorts of videogame characters in there that are copyrighted and I don't see anyone rasing hell over it. I got my av out of a book, I liked the picture so I scanned it in and shrunk it down.

So I'd say go for it if you want to...
