In my experience with evocation so far, there are three ways to acquire the powers that the goetics, or any other spirits as far as I know, which all function differently, not including having a spirit acomplish something for you directly.
You can ask them to grant an ability such as communcation with animals to accomplish a task; you can prepare a proper talisman and have them imbue that talisman with said power; or you can have them teach you how to develop and use that ability.
In the first case, it will be a one-shot deal, persisting until the task is accomplished. An example might be evoking a spirit to help you get a promotion. Until you get that promotion you will know the right things to say, spot the right opportunity, and run into or encounter the right people at the right times to bring about a promotion.
A talisman takes work, it has to be created properly or the spirit simply won't be able to imbue the power into the talisman - they have rules they have to work by just as we do. Depending on the circumstances of the individual talisman and spirit, this can be termporary and need to be periodically 'recharged' as it were, or it can be permanent, and then the power is applied through the talisman. For instance a luck talisman or one of those from the greater key.
The last is the longest way, but clears you of any kind of pact, and broadens your horizon as a person and as a magician. The spirit can instruct you - bit by bit over several evocations, or all at once by dictation - on how to manifest that power yourself. Inclusive in this method is your own preparation, which the spirit will instruct you in if you word your demands properly - always include something to the effect of "...safely develop and utilize the power that you are able to grant me..."
Spirits can also be bound into servitude permanently, however, I would not personally trust this method. It involves contracting the spirit to answer when you call it and serve you forthwith as you have commanded it to. However, not that most of us will ever encounter these situations, there are times when even if you call the spirit, it cannot come and serve you. Someone else can intervene with their own contracted spirit, etc. Also, it may not always work in the way you intend for it to.
Of course I'm biased towards learning to 'do for oneself' as it were - the best use a spirit can be put to is teaching you, in my opinion. There are stories across all cultures of magicians and shamans learning from spirits, rather than employing them to accomplish tasks, and those stories less often end with "and so he was carried off to hell" in so many words.
