Upon invocation of a spirit reputed for creating wealth, my income abruptly increased approximately 25% to 50%. After I changed my evocations and began to focus on another spirit and other goals, the wealth effect has gradually decreased although my overall income has still remained higher than before. This stuff works, although the entire 'alter-reality' has its repercussions which is otherwise known as karma.
I also used, in retrospect, an incredibly powerful spell to get my present girlfriend. It worked and I'm satisfied with its action, though I deeply wish that some of those repurcussions could have been avoided.
I can't remember many failures, to be honest. What is sensible is to understand that anything you do will probably bring you some result, even if its not what you expected or considered. So as long as you do something, something will happen. It may be too subtle for you to notice it, it may have nothing at all to do with your intentions, but it will do something. Its like mixing random chemicals together! You might change the smell, at the least, even if the color doesn't change and nothing reacts!
All of that is why wisdom and intelligence is important. If you want to get hydrochloric acid, it helps to have some knowledge of what chemicals you're working with. If you want to make something that is medically effective, then you'll need not only to know the chemicals that you're working with, but also how your body may react and affect to it. Magick is little different from the mundane and shouldn't be seen as a shortcut: its just another set of work and methods that can assist you. If you're hiring someone, consider it as hiring an agent to assist you in a field of knowledge that you have little awareness of(like hiring an oil specialists to help you to find oil) and be aware that there are many charlatans.
I'm sure there are some genuine spellcasters who may work for money. I don't know how many, though. Its a field fraught with frauds.
