homunculus= (as far as i no) dead brought back to life through use of alchemy
The homunculus is a living creature created through the use of alchemy, not the ressurection of a previously dead creature. It is usually described as requiring the use of manure, semen, blood or some other rather strange components. Paracelsus describes it in some detail in Archidoxes of Magic. In his descriptions it should be noted that it is mainly created through alchemical or physical means. (i.e. by combining certain substances. ) To myself this appears to be one of the major differences with it and a golem. Where the golem does require a physical medium to be created (usually clay) it is imbued with life through cabalistic ritual while the homunculus is given life by the workings of the combined components. The homunculus seems to have some similarity with the idea of "spontaneous generation" that was often proposed by scientists in pre-enlightenment times. It goes hand-in-hand with the idea that flies were formed by rotting meat rather than by the flies themselves. Other scientists sought to disprove this idea and eventually it was accepted as false through the experiments of Pasteur.
