Is it really necessary to follow the grimoire in evo/invocation?
Can we not design our own ritual?
Short answers (Only answering from my experience with evocation):
1. No.
2. Yes.
For me, the only thing that's really neccesary is a firm awareness of my circle, astral vision/perception, and an "enflamed" desire to talk to the spirit. That desire takes form in physical, mental, emotional words spoken to call whatever spirit, in my own words. Other than that, I don't personally see the reason for going through all the hooplah of traditional methods, but hey, that's me.
I'm not saying that traditional methods are useless. I don't know, because I've never used them, but if others found their way to success using them, I say, go ahead! It just hasn't been my experience, nor my desire to experience, so, I answered the way I've answered.
I should also say that before beginning evocation, one most definatly SHOULD have a grounding in the basic things that makes evocation work (from my expererience and point of view only), namely, the ability to "see" the spirit, and if not see him, sense him....to be able to "talk" to the spirit, if not in words, in moving images and feelings. And most importantly, the ability to make the spirit leave should it become troublesome. All of these things, and more (I know I'm leaving some things out, but these are the first things that come to mind as being important to ME, other things, I probably take for granted at this stage in my development) can be learned by repeated practice of energy manipulation and banishing. LBRP+LBRH, your own thing, whatever. "Mundane" ritual teaches you ALOT if you give it time. If you have no background whatsoever, then yeah, I suppose the traditional methods would be the way to go.
But strictly speaking, I only use an LBRP, LBRH, or a Solar Ball (or any combo), some focal point for the spirit, like a sigil, and my desire. Other than that, that's it. No bells or whistles. Though, during the last evocation, I did use a Wand that was gifted to me, but normally, I use nothing but myself. (no triangles, predetermined "rants", etc)
