What's the point? What's the ******* POINT?!

I graduated with a degree in Information Systems Management (My first passion.) The field has now moved to Asia.

I got a job as a chef (My second passion ...at least, I thought it was.) I was laid off due to the economy (Not much call for a gourmet chef when the world is now grooving to Subway and Mickey D's.)

Why get excited about anything if it's only going to be yanked away from you later on? (I'd love to be able to stay in one place for twenty years. I want something to retire on.)

What is my place in this world?

If it's any consolation, I've been asking myself the same thing since I was old enough to tie my own shoes. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hmm.gif)

I dunno, I suppose the point of life is to learn that there really is no point. Eventually you'll die, I'll die, everyone that ever knew us will die, and the very lucky among us will wind up as a footnote in a history book. And then the sun will eventually go nova, engulf and vaporise all the inner planets--maybe Mars will survive, maybe not--and no traces of any life here will remain at all. Eventually the universe itself will go cold and wink out of existence. *shrug*

So really, what *is* the point? My goal is to find some way to get out of this trap, personally. I don't know how I'm going to yet, though...but get there I will. Frankly I wonder if the whole purpose in life thing/death/reincarnation is one hell of a scam--maybe we're all here because we don't know any better--perhaps life is what happens when we piss God off--but maybe that's just me. *shrug*

Well you two are certainly having a dark night.I use a tool called The Four Agreements. 1.Say only impeccable things..2.Take nothing personally. 3.Assume nothing. 4.Always do your best. All this must be based on self love. That means that you can bend things in your own favour. Let me apologise now,I have forgotten the name of the author. It works for me anyway.

EDIT: Mods, can we transfer this one to fight club? That seems to be a more appropriate place to vent things out...

First paragraph response: Information Systems? Then as an IT student to another practitioner in the arts of computer information, I advise you to learn linux and go into Networking. In the words of another IT friend of mine: "If you know linux, it doesn't matter whether or not you have a degree, you get a job in Networking regardless." "How come?" "Because at least 75% of Networks and Servers run on it while only 1% of PC's do."

Second paragraph response: Then make a distinctive style and be an entrepreneur in food service for your own style of cooking. If you pay attention to Imperial Arts's blog, he is related information by an entity about economics. paraphrased, it's the entrepreneurs and the innovators that hold most of the moneymaking potential. Think of it as the "Royalty Check" effect.

Third paragraph response: Because you need to know how to harmonize with the situation. Very few people are able to get by in life happily just plodding along, subjecting their efforts to the oversight of another. It is when you manage your own space that you gain anything. A position in management, supervision, or the like may hold the answer to what you need. IT and Information systems are overseas for the lower level jobs... but the higher level IT is still around here in abundance. In economic terms, the US has the bulk of businesses in management offices. Getting a first-tier occupation like manufacturing or having your own cubicle and being "inside the box" makes you more liable to replacement.

A good attitude to approach the situation may be: "You don't own me, you are renting what I am offering." This attitude holds you in the center point of power. Meditate on this a bit.

I guess you could say that. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Well ... the only person I'm really fighting with is myself. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

If you want to open your own place, you have to eat, sleep, and breathe cooking.

You have to work absolutely insane hours (60-80 hours a week ... and holidays ... and weekends. It's not a job for dilettantes.)

I'm just not ready for that type of commitment. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I know a lot of middle managers who are being shown the door ("Restructuring", anyone?)

Meh I'll leave it here. Normally topics like this go to the life style and entertainment section, not that I find our lovely Soceress' problems entertaining. That's just where most topics of this nature are directed.

At any rate Sorceress...

Your situation is one with no real good answer for a solution. I suppose if you just give up on your hopes and dreams you might as well commit suicide (which I think you're smart enough to not do that).

Look we've all had our share of bull shit in life. There is nothing nobody can do about the past. Sometimes shit just happens. You really have two options - live in the past and sulk and pout about or look towards new horizons and per sue them.

One of the biggest schools of thought in Buddhism is that attachments are the root of all suffering. I mean think about it. Your passion is what you are most connected or attached to. You persued a career in technology services, sweet! Unfortunately at the time you didn't have the foresight to know that many of our technology based jobs are being out sourced to other countries. Right now some dude in a turbin is doing your job and all so that some coperate tycoon can gauge out an extra luxary sports car. It sucks, believe me I know. Then you looked into a career cooking (I'm hungry right now!) But again, you found out the hard way that making a living doing that in our modern go go society is very hard. Your passions lead you to suffering. So if passion leads to suffering, one must let go of their attachments. RIght???

WRONG!!!

Is that really the solution though? I mean although the buddhist have a good point but is it very realistic to just cast off all attachments? That, from my psychological background, is very very hard thing to do. And one that doesn't garuntee "happiness" in the sense of success and emotional elation. No matter what you will be passionate about something. Like right now you are kind of being passionate about not being passionate. You're allowing yourself to let the BS in life hold you back.

Although I respect buddhism, I disagree with them to a point. I think it is very important to have attachments. But positive attachments. Things that make you become a better person. That in my opinion is the essences of trancendence. Not meditating on how you screwed up or someone screw you over to make a buck nor is trying to deny the very basis of your existance as an individual. That doesn't solve anything and it doesn't produce anything of value. But positive attachments like close friends, family, hobbies that you enjoy things you like doing are all good attachments. So you have a degree in technology - write a resume and put it on Craig's list (or something like that). So you like to cook focus that ability some where that makes you happy - maybe cook yourself a really nice meal.

Ultimately things go wrong. People get laid off and in our economy things are taking a dive. Things are rough. But you don't have to let all that stuff hold you down. As long as you keep your inner flame kindled you can strive towards whatever goal you wish.

And at that I'm hungry and I need to get some thing to eat before I try to turn my key board into a sub sandwich.

I'm sorry for dumping on all of you. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I just had to vent.

I posted what I did here because I thought this was the forum related to finding one's life prupose? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused012.gif)

Oh to have The Sorceress of Grayskull's equanimity towards the whole thing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blablabla.gif)

Acid, you're absolutely right. I have nothing to gain by stewing in my own juices.

Thanks for your advice, everyone. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well thank you for seeing my point of view. But remember its always ok to vent as long as you are using venting as a method to forward and dealing with your emotions rather than stew over stuff that's done and gone. I'm sure you'll always be able to find people on this site who will listen and grant you a piece of insight too! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

lol your kool, so hey let me ask you this, what is the point to a hug or a kiss. if your only going to lose, what you've worked hard to get, maybe toil aint the way, perhaps love is the best. so i've toyed with that thought many a day, you seem to be toying with it this very day.. who am i what does it mean to exsist, how can i use this curse as a gift. lol dont worry about the spoils of war, the spoils are unknown and certain all the more, we sacrifice, we fight, for the love in our life, but that doesn't mean this place aint worth livin in. perhaps this world is so led astray that the good of the spirit seems to them as decay, that the love we seek well is a false sense of hell, that just means that most are afraid, on this epic quest of a life we behold, someday we'll stand tall with the collums of eider gold, but for now, we walk where the serpents live. ^^ a world cashed and thrown to the waste, does not mean we must follow and hide our heavenly faces, the places we'll go and the things that we'll see, forever is a long time you know, so is eternity...between you and me i believe we can see, just what our soul is too busy hiding.

i duno just like say screw em let them think whatever, cuz you love em ^^ otherwise we'll spend much too much energy trying to be something were not

to be rather than to seem

peace
