Voodoo Doll Options

Hi.

I was walking up the street of my house and I found a little yellow voodoo doll. The doll was a person in a multitude of bandages as if it had been struck down by a vehicle or in some kind of crash. It was fashioned out of strings. I'm not sure what to think. I picked it up wondering what it was, then brought it to the outside of my door, showed it to my fiance and her friend and then I threw it away into the bushes. I'm told by her friend that you can buy these at the local store and they actually come with little curse messages. I didn't bring it in my house, and I'm a fair bit weirded out by the whole thing. Can anybody elaborate on this for me?
