I'm curious to see what the general opinions on this board are for Halloween. I know some people think it's the strongest time for certain kinds of magic, whereas other people think it's crass and loud and an insult to all those of the magically inclined. I was just wondering who put stock into the magical theories surrounding this holiday, and what kind of magic you might be using it for, or none at all.

Greetings,

Halloween is interesting, lots of myths, superstitions and what not that provide reading but little else. From Samhain- pagan/Wiccan celebration- to the Catholic All Hallows' Eve and All Souls Day Nov. 1st, a lot of people give this day a lot of meaning. There may be some formal system around the holiday; I don't know. What is typically found is in folklore. The only thing strictly magick I know is you can see the people who will die in the next year pass by churches at midnight.

Personally, I've never come across anyone who thinks it's "an insult to all those of the magically inclined," but would not be surprised ether. Just curious what their argument is?

well, for me its one ofc the most sacred holidays in my calendar, especially because Im south american, and I celebrated like the mexican day of the dead, which its the day that your dead ancestors come to visit you, and I'm expecting my grandfather to come and visit me and have a little chat and dinner....so in my case it is its thew third most sacred magickal holiday (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jacko.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wandwizard.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wizard.gif)

magickly i never really got a sense of doom or passage from souls from the day but isnt it supposed to be the day when "the veil " between the spiritual and the physical is at its weakest? hmmm..... i feel an experiment comming on

I THINK ITS TOTALLY MAGICAL (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Me too! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Halloween & April Fools' Day, two holy-days where you're free to ignore social norms! Well, Mardi-Gras too but for some it's just Fat Tuesday. I'm also looking forward to Deceber 8th - Pretend To Be A Time Traveler Day http://forums.koalawallop.net/viewtopic.php?t=1719

I don't at all think Halloween is insulting, but I know there are quite a few people that do. There was an article I was reading actually about a wiccan woman trying to sue over a halloween decoration portraying a hanging witch. Rather ridiculous in my opinion. Some people get kinda grudgy because of the way modern Halloween portrays witches, green and ugly and broomstick flying and such. Just how everything that goes into making Halloween for us completely deprecated and stereotyped. Doesn't really bug me, but I can understand how some people could find it annoying.

yes I always take it to be the time when the veil is thinnest (quite a common view in Ireland). This year on Samhain I am thinking of doing a banishing (of all things I want to leave behind) a thanksgiving (of the things which I have loved) and a manifestation of things I hope to achieve/knowledge to gain: I may even charge some talismans.

What kinds of ritual magic would be best to work on Samhain in your experiences?

Great time of the year, Great party time, great magick time...Cool enough for jackets, but not too cold to be outside late at night...well that would depend on where you are I guess.

As for Magick, depends on what you correspond it with. Personally I am usually having too much of a good time to really care, this year I may go for something different though, as it is in the middle of the week. But it is traditionally a very social time for me, so I don’t try to do anything solitary. Again this year may be different. Waning moon, Wodens day…who knows, perhaps honoring the gods of beer.

I personally love Halloween, Its the only time people don't look at me completely weird by the way I'm dressed. And I have come across people who dislike the whole thing but hey, I really don't care I enjoy it so I celebrate it. I get like a energy boost that lasts usually oct 26th through nov 5th. It's one of the few times out of the year that I actually feel alive... I may be insane hahaha. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/i_triangle.gif)

So how was everyone's Halloween?

Mine was incredibly pleasant, depending on how you count it, last weekend I went to a little cocktail party, and did the normal pick up on the hottie, while the boyfriend was there.
My only trouble was she got interested at the same time as a friend of mine was leaving and I abandoned her to speak with the friend, she had just gotten back from a business trip and we had some catching up to do.

Needless to say the hottie then was tied to her boyfriend, but still showing interest…it may have been that I lost interest at that point, don’t, but I know where she works and I have reasons to stop there in the future :-P

But the rest of the party was fun until the techies started telling war stories (I am a techie, but come on, at a party???) anyway everyone got home alright and my friends took good care of me, great food, good conversation, good looking women…I could not ask for more.

Then on Holloween…I spent with friends on their driveway and throughout the neighborhood escorting kids as they did the trick or treat thing. Later we ate and talked politics and life. Good times.

After that, came home, made some posts here, or read some, turned off all my electronics lit some candles, did some centering, did some invoking, said hi, mentioned those that are lost from this realm this year(not many at all this year for me, only two and not particularly close), mentioned those that are in my thoughts whom I have lost in years past. Asked those who wished to depart, those that don’t to depart when they wished, closed everything down, poured myself some wine drank it and went to sleep.

I had been thinking of doing some more serious work that night, but I was in a happy mood did not want to change that too much. Still not in the mood tonight, perhaps tomorrow.
