Saint Michael and Satan, Ahuramazda and Ahriman, Push and Pull, Life and Death, Yin and Yang. Light and Dark. I know what you're all thinking. "This light magick vs. dark magick bs again? How many times to I have to explain that they're on a spectrum?" So yeah, I'm not even on that subject.

I've been thinking about this pretty much as long as I've been in the occult and a book I just read (trashy literature which I'm sure none of you would like xD) that discussed the very essences of Light and Darkness, of Good and Evil. I've been toying with ideas here. The discussion: Is it possible to manifest one of these forces? No, I don't mean generating light or turning one off (or should I refer to that as generating darkness?), I mean could I, when faced with an inherently evil entity such as a demon, invoke Light as I would Earth or Water to battle its Darkness? Or vice versa, if I infuriated an angel (I can't imagine how I would do that, but this is all hypothetical) could I invoke Darkness to battle its Light? No, I don't mean calling spirits, and I don't consider that an option for me (It's a personal decision on my part). I mean calling on the elemental forces, as I when I want to move a storm or the like. Then I don't call on the spirits, just the components of existence. I've done a little work with light and it's been pretty beneficial to me (staving off the haunting in my house, etc.). I have never personally experienced the anger of a light-oriented being, but in principle the same thing should work with darkness.

So the reason this is in the discussion forum and not the sorcery forums is I think this should be discussed...

Are light and dark elements? Can they be invoked like air, water, earth and fire? Or is light just a form of psionics?

Yes. Within the elements themselves there are spectrum. To use a literal example, magma (or as a energetic frequency) is an intermediate between your choices of earth/stone and flame/heat.

Light and dark is an ambiguous concept with wide, overarching connotations. One could attribute light to the generally stereotypical idea of 'holy healing', but on the other hand one could attribute it to an all consuming, all destroying essence. The same could be of dark as the great remover; it can either be a gradual fog removing the existence of all things, or perhaps a protective shroud.

In a very basic sense, they can be invoked, manipulated bent, but in higher concentrations, they'll end up influencing your own energy. As a caster, we focus on working with energy and we often forget that in the processes of the reaction we are a part of it.

I wouldn't call them elements in the generally used sense, however I do believe them to be something like elements such as fire, water, etc. Unfortunately, I don't have an actual definition as to what they would be. I do think you can invoke these forces, however I feel one would require a certain affinity for them just like you would with normal elements. I am in agreement with Kaboom13 on the ambiguity of the the concept of light and darkness, simply because there doesn't seem to be a clear cut definition for either of them.

I understand your points, but I suppose I was vague... by light I mean the essence of good, everything that benefits people. By darkness I mean the essence of evil, that which causes all discord and hatred in the world.

I've worked with this a little more and had major success. I find them to be perfectly applicable.

@Pyre: You don't need an affinity to call on an element and make it manifest, affinities determine how that element manifests. I don't mean to be rude, I'm just gently chastising you since you're new to this business (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Well anyway (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blablabla.gif) have a good day.

hey etherial- check out the five asian elements - at first it seems that the light/dark and good/bad would apply to the function of the element (hurt/heal in the eye of the beholder) instead of being a element itself, but if you change the view of an element to the function instead of the abstract, it works!

very interesting! - nice, and thanks for the enlightenment - its been a good day for enlightenment!
