I'm just wondering what people think of using prayers and invocations as a form of banishing as opposed to the more traditional methods such as LBRP?

I've written a fairly indepth prayer/invocation of Qebhut, an ancient Egyptian Goddess associated with cleansing; I've invoked her for general cleansing before and it seemed to work really well, so I'm hoping that a banishing will work well too!

Any replies would be much appreciated!

Thanks! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/egypt1.gif)

NetherSpirit,

Have to say, that's a really cool idea!

It seems to me that the LBRP includes invocations of protection and in effect banishing, i.e. setting up the archangels in the four quarters, in addition to using the "banishing" earth pentagrams. I've seen examples of other rituals that invoke various gods to guard or cleanse the circle. So theoretically, it would make sense that you could use other Gods or spirits to achieve a banishing effect if that's what they do (or what you ask them to do).

Whether or not it works is a different matter entirely, but if you have experience with more "traditional" banishing you can compare the effects and make a judgement. As one criterion of success, (to quote from Liber O):

"Success in 'banishing' is known by a 'feeling of cleanliness' in the atmosphere; success in 'invoking' by a 'feeling of holiness.' It is unfortunate that these terms are so vague." [1]

...but it's pretty clear what the effects feel like once you've felt them. And it could feel different too and still be just as good as the LBRP, perhaps as a different level of banishing.

Let us know what happens if you try it!

I did an evocation last night and invoked Qebhut to banish the spirit, and whilst it seemed to work, it wasn't as powerful as I'd have liked, so I think perhaps my next step should be to form more of a connection with Qebhut. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hmm, hard to comment without knowing exactly what you did...but I wonder if just a wee invocation prior to the evocation would help.

In the LBRP, the first part (the cabalistic cross) can be interpreted as a minor invocation, among other things, possibly giving you juice to use on the banishing pentagrams.

Perhaps something similar, an appeal to Ptah or some such, could help here as well.

Ah, that's a really good idea! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I'm going to keep refining my whole system of evocation and then when I'm getting consistently good results I shall probably make a thread on here to see what people think. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

If I remember rightly, doesn't the LBRP involve invoking four archangels of the directions? I've not got a lot of experience with it, so forgive me if I'm wrong! But if that's right, perhaps something like invoking the four sons of Horus could work?

I'm wondering if certain tools would help too? I'm trying to find someone who can make me a Was sceptre at the moment, and then a ring consecrated and dedicated to Qebhut seems like it could be extremely helpful, and possibly one consecrated and dedicated to Nun as he "is" the primeval waters from which all of existence came forth (although with the amount of Egyptian creation stories, who knows? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/13.gif) ). Egyptian priests and magicians would often take the temple back to a state of Nun, from which they could essentially "create" anything they wanted by manipulating (for want of a better) Nun, which I think is a pretty awesome concept. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Also, any suggestions for Egyptian spirits I could attempt to evoke? I don't particularly want to evoke the Gods themselves as they are so powerful and deserve so much respect; perhaps something like a scorpion soldier?

Thanks for the replies by the way! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/egypt1.gif)
