I thought the best way to set this up would be to just ask a more generic question for the pole, and to ask people to leave their personal testimony of their specific evocation/invocation in a reply.

If the most powerful spirit you've ever encountered did not come from an evocation or invocation, your stories are still welcome.

I've never attempted to evoke a god or goddess, so I probably shouldn't have cast a vote, but while I have never obtained manifestation, demons from the Goetia have seemed most efficacious to me.

Generally speaking Gods/Goddess are racked above everything else, angel/demons/djinn/ next and then the human spirit is something of a wild card which can come before or after anything of its creation. Personal, the servitor I find above the human spirit simply because it is created to do something the human can't. Amusingly, I seem to recall some myths where gods were overcome (or at least tricked) by humans. Not really the human spirit but its close enough.

Cosmic consciousness is devoid of diversity; yet the universe of diversity exists in notion....
We contemplate that reality in which everything exists, to which everything belongs,
from which everything has emerged, which is the cause of everything and which is everything....
The light of [this] self-knowledge alone illumines all experiences. It shines by its own light.
This inner light appears to be outside and to illumine external objects.

I think the most powerful creature I have evoked has been a human spirit.

I have summoned demons in the past, but these have just been general summongs without having a specific named demon in mind. The two I have spoken to seemed - not 'weak' per se, but - rather less powerful than other spirits I have encountered during my lifetime. I agree with Fatherjhon that human spirits seem to be something of a wildcard, and these are what I have most contact with; some are extremely powerful and on par with any demon in my opinion, and some are incredibly 'weak' or at least seem to be the same as they were in life. Out of those powerful human spirits I've evoked their actual powers and abilities seem to greatly vary.

There are perhaps only two human spirits that I'm rather attached too, and one of those I would definately say is the most powerful spirit I have evoked, and it's a rather sobering thought to be to know that she isn't even the most powerful either. I have great respect for spirits, but to be fair I'm somewhat scared of evoking the more powerful demons, or any angel or gods, simply because of the power they hold. There is a spirit around me recently I can't shake, (not evoked) and his sheer power and use of it terrifies me, I can't imagine willingly evoking a spirit like that and subjecting myself to that kind of presence.

The strongest spirit I've channeled is a spirit in The Abyss on the astral and it was his assistance that allowed me to understand the abyss and the energy inside of it and inside of my personal abyss.
Next to that would be the god/entity Erebus, my patron. He's a god of darkness and his power was incredibly vast and sobering.

I would like it to be qualified here what exactly is meant by "most powerful". How is this "power" measured/quantified ? It seems to me that the most powerful spirit that I have summoned is that of coffee - I need it everyday, and I work faithfully to serve it. Furthermore, I worship its physical manifestation to the point where I will make great sacrifices in order to obtain it and gratify my desire to commune with it.

It is important to clarify what exactly is the metric by which we compare our magical experiences.

QUOTE(VitalWinds @ Mar 18 2011, 06:54 PM) *

Coffee isn't a spirit.

Shamans may invoke the spirits of psychoactive plants to obtain certain powers. Coffee would qualify. "Oh clever Coffee, active Coffee, stimulating Coffee, be with me now that I may be fresh and alert during this long day". It should be done with proper respect to the spirit and an acknowledgment of thanks for the help given; stumbling unshaven and red-eyed into the kitchen and groaning "gimme a cup" does not qualify. Most powerful? Oh yes, I've had some experience with that. But I could no more compel that being than I could compel anyone who has free will.

I think you may be misconstruing the idea that one can invoke the "quintessence" of an inanimate object to the point of personifying said object. Coffee is not aware of it's existence.

For the sake of this conversation, "spirit" is the non-corporeal form of an entity or person, such as the general examples listed earlier.

Is there a difference between "quintessence" and "spirit"? In terms of relating to something, I don't see a difference.

The idea of "form" is derived from the physical world and is irrelevant to "spirit"; beings that have had an existence in the physical world self-identify with a static form, those that haven't derive whatever forms they use from human projections or their own decisions.

For humans, I would agree that there is no difference.

"beings that have had an existence in the physical world self-identify with a static form, those that haven't derive whatever forms they use from human projections or their own decisions." Coffee doesn't make decisions, but maybe I simply missed your point.
