Practical Magick Options

Greetings!
I have recently begun my spiritual journey having already read the intro books: "Practical Magick for beginners"(by Brandy Williams) and Magick for beginners by J.H Brennan. I I am an aspiring sorceror/necromancer (practicioner of high magick) and wish to fulfill that goal, however i don't know which books to read next... I don't want to pick up something thats too advanced for me(highly possible) but rather go up in levels of difficulty of magick, astral travel skills, meditation etc....

Any advice and help on where do i go next would be most appreciated, ima little lost right now

I always suggest Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig for beginners of ceremmonial magick. It's a wonderful book and gives a great overview of magick, astral travel, making talismans and where and how to begin.

The Magician's Companion by Bill Whitcomb is an excellent resource for correspondences. It's also great for being on hand when you are making talismans or drawing circles.

The Three Books of Occult Philosophy might be a little much for a beginner but it's a great resource to have on hand none the less. I has a wonderful amount of information on the occult and is essentially a MUST for any practitoners library.

I have to admit that I am a fan of Donald Tyson and he has some excellent books out on ritual magick for beginners. Familiar Spirits is also a good book to read up on when you begin creating your own familiars. Portable Magick I just bought and I tell you it's great. It's how to perform ritual magick with just the tarot as a tool, (it's especially good if you're on the road or in a jam and need to work some magick but you don't have your tools). Ritual Magick is supposed to be good (sorry I haven't gotten my hands on it yet to read it and give it a decent review) and going by the authors track record I would suggest this one.

These are just a few that are really good for beginners in high magick. Start here, and get the basics, then read up on evocation and the proper techniques to do so. If you want to jump the gun than Forbidden Rites is a good book to read up on 15th century necromancy, it's based on the munich handbook.

I agree with Angalor that Modern Magick by DMK is an awesome place to begin. Another option might be Circles of Power by John Michael Greer...I've heard that it is excellent and that some people prefer that book to Kraig's as a beginning text. But honestly I've never read it myself.

As for Tyson, I like him ok but I wouldn't recommend him for a beginner. Why? Simply because although his rituals are good and workable, he also interjects a lot of his own personal theories into his work. He then presents these musings and theories as the Truth. A beginner might get swamped in these ideas while a more experienced practitioner will be able to sift through them and choose or discard as he pleases.

Familiar Spirits fits the above description perfectly. It's a good book, with good ritual ideas, and an interesting historical survey of familiar spirits. The only drawback is Tyson's editorializing. Ritual Magick however, is NOT that great. You can get all the information in Kraig's book and more...with much more depth and explanation.
