so theres many rituals that I've come across where you must utter your magical name/motto/handle to the entities that you invoke as part of it

trouble is, I never decided on one

what goes into picking a magical name? what do you need to consider when coming up with a motto or handle for yourself? and does it really need to be in latin or greek?

help pls

You have a name which your parents gave you.
This is the label which you have carried all your life.
Attached to it are all the feelings and ideas you have about yourself,
and that others project upon you.
it is a mini-egregore and as such can prove limiting.

A magical name is an inspirational name
an ideal which enflames and lifts your soul
it is free from any dead weight
and reminds you of your ultimate desire.

What is that you really want?
What motto inspires you to be who you want to be?

It doesnt have to be Latin or Greek this is a convention
(which i think has some uses)
In my opinion the most important thing is that it is your name for 'NOW'
you can always change your name later as your desire evolves.

meditate and ask your higher self what is the best piece of advice for you in this moment.
If something comes to you and it rings true- there you have a motto
try to strip away from it all extreneuous detail and leave it as unambiguous as possible
remember that this motto is giving instructions to your subconscious mind
(which is easily confused-bless)
if you then want to translate it into another language feel free.

Maybe there is a pattern in your life that will bring you your magical name.

It might relate to your star sign or a hobby or a nickname, but I think it will be waiting for you, right there amidst the busyness of your life.

My own came from being a sun sign and always drawing golden or coloured rays around anything I drew, these looked like sun rays so I chose mine based on this.

And also remember . . . you don't HAVE to have a magical name to do those rituals. You can perform them using your given name, and they will / can be successful.
Part of what a magical name does is to set apart a magickal mind or persona, so that you can operate your magickal work in a more purely magickal environment. So that:
Joe Friday - husband on the slight outs for not getting his wife a gift with that anniversery card
or
Mr. Friday - engineer at the pulp plant (that he knows is still secretly dumping mercury into the the water)
or
Joey - who spend some evenings at the pub (and is sure two of his "pub" friends are alcoholics)
or even
daddy - who just this evening had to give his six year old daughter a spank (in public) for saying a cuss word. (where do they learn that shit . . . probably this bitches across the street)

Its easy to carry some aspects of those into your magickal work. Its easy to have that effect your magickal mind . . and magickal environment.

A magickal name can do alot of things . . . one is to seperate your magickal "self" from you mundane "selves". In that sense, its like a magickal robe or anything else that helps you achieve and maintain a purer magickal mind.

Plus, its cool to call yourself The Incarnate God of Light and Darkness (I hear roman horns) in Greek . . . or is that just me (be honest)

But you are who you are, magickal name or not . . . and it is up to you (not some special name) to define and operate in your normal or magickal moments.
Any name (that you decide is you at that moment) will work . . . even the boring one your parents gave you.
It will work!

I have to reaffirm what Pilgrim Child said, traditionally the motto should reflect your highest aspirations. This will of course change as you learn and grow. Then also traditionally the name is put into another language such as hebrew, latin, or greek, just to add that subtle hint of mystery. It can be in english if you choose or even pig latin it doesn't matter as long as you take it seriously.

Then some people choose a name that is not intials of a motto but rather a word or name that has a special meaning to you for whatever reason. It is your magick, it is your name, as long as it has meaning to you it will be fine.

Later as you progress as a magician you may come to know the name of your higher self or HGA and later even the name of your divine self. These names will be substituted into your ritual work as well in the N spot but of course you will retain your magical name when dealing with others.

Good luck!

Some Native American tribes would go on vission quests. On these spiritual journies the idea was to transition from boyhood to manhood. This also meant finding a new name. Now I wouldn't suggest wondering around the wilderness until you achieve enlightenment but perhaps as you ponder the advice we give you, you do so in solitude for several days, if possible of course.

Personally I descided that I did not need a magickal name. I realized, in my case, that taking on a new name only served to distance myself from true self-discovery. I was using a false name I created in an attempt to form a new identy of somebody who had aspects of myself, but was not actually me. I can't remember anymore but what Icame up with was more suited for a servitor than myself. Eventually I figured that the name my mother gave me was magickal enough for me. And in reallity the meaning of my full name is pretty spiritual to me - Bearing Chirst Who is like God, Pure. However I do refrain from claiming to be Christ or God, but you can see the spiritual under tones. Now you may choose to take on a new name but really search yourself before setting one in stone. My suggestion is that before you look to creating a new name first start at your roots and discover the etymology of your birth name. Try this and see what you find.

"Behind the Name"
If you're willing to fend for the money you might even dig deeper than your name alone and look into your family history. If you live in or near Wyoming every public library has Ancestory.com for free. THis might be true for your area too. Never know.

Once you know what your name means check out the numerology of it as well.

If your looking for a little inspiration and you want your motto to be in Latin, then it wouldn't do any harm to check out a list of university mottos!

Most are written in Latin and have occult overtones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_university_mottos

To find a suitable magickal name/motto, you really only need two things:

1. Alphabet cereal ( Milk optional )
2. Latin Dictionary

Now the ritual itself is somewhat obscure, but I would be willing to give details on how to set about it in private, provided you know the secret handshake of the 1/2°=4°.

My first magick name was my family motto, which was found easy enough by searching my surname online. If you're curious about what it was, it's in my sig.

Reiterating what's already been said:
The magickal motto might be some sort of affirmation of what you plan on accomplishing on your path, an oath, or perhaps simply ambiguous sayings in latin that sound neato.

Having them translated into Latin or Greek is just a formality, but in no way imperative.

I'm sure something will come to you, or you'll come across something. Whichever.

LVX,
Nick

When I was choosing my magickal name, I went to a site with some Latin quotes, and looked for some that I felt suited me. In the end, I was torn between two choices, and couldn't settle on either. I finally got a push in the right direction when, after doing the LBRP before going to bed for some grounding, I started meditating. I did this for about 30 minutes , but it only felt like an instant. I then went to sleep and had a lucid dream which then led to AP. There, I had a strange splitting sensation, and I started to view things from a third-person perspective. Someone then walked up to my "clone," who was dressed in black and blue (maybe of some significance), and the man asked my name. He replied with a simple, "Seif."

The next morning, I didn't remember this situation until I thought about which magickal name I would choose yet again. This all came to me in a rush as I remembered it, triggered by the thought of which I should choose. The answer was clear.

I don't know if my anecdote is helpful in any way, but just thought I would share it.

Greetings All,

The adoption of a Magickal Name or as some Western Esoteric Traditions calls them (Magickal Mottos) is of a very significant importance. Many Cultures rely on Visions, Dreams, Alternate States of Reality during Meditation to receive inspiration for their New Name.

In Indigenous Cultures such as the North American Indians a Name change meant one has matured to the point of becoming accepted as an adult. Their new position within the community brought with it respect, belonging, but also responsibility. They must live up to the significance of this New Name.

Often in Western Esoteric Traditions and Western Mystery Traditions the Magickal Name, or Magickal Motto signifies a new beginning. One where the member shall be known in the community by their Motto. Their birth names are shed while in Lodge or Temple and they are specifically called by their Magickal Motto. The significance it shows in the Initiates Life is that they have stepped out of the mundane aspects of everyday normalcy and have taken upon themselves the responsibility to do the Great Work.

Their Magickal Motto strengthens them to live up to the meaning of their Name, that is why it is important to choose a Magickal Name or Motto with the knowledge that it reflects your purpose in the Great Work. Often as Initiates advance in Grades they change Magickal Mottos to reflect their New Pupose or Intent to fulfill their responsibility to the work of the Order.

Respectfully,
Helel (Joseph)

I had a spiritual name from a sister spirit, and the sister spirit was Saphutai and the name given to me was Jendatai. They're obviously Eastern or Middle Eastern in origin (there are very few nonsense sounds) but I've never discerned the meaning. Meanwhile I grew out of that phase, and my only magical names are my handles on the Internet. It's not that I don't believe in magical names, I just don't use one anymore. I'm wondering if a spirit will give me a new one in time?
