Before I say what the dream was, I must mention that for the two days prior to this dream I had been pondering to myself what my spiritual animal is.
__________________________
I was with my girlfriend at her mother's house, sitting on the couch watching television. I needed to go to our house for something that I can't remember now, so I left the house and walked home. When I walked up to the fence, I stopped dead in my tracks. I found a full grown red fox sitting before me, waiting directly in my path. My initial reaction was to gasp, but I did not run. My fear was quickly replaced with curiousity. I tilted my head sideways and walked back and forth from left and right. As I did so, the fox stood up and walked in the same directions as I did, exactly when I did. I then smiled to myself and thought, "He's playing with me..."
I woke up just after that thought.

Your totem animals will sometimes make themselves known to you like that, so it seems likely enough that the fox is your totem animal. But it isn't enough evidence all by itself. Perhaps if you have red foxes show up in your life multiple times over a comparatively short period, it would be a strong indication. If you're really interested, some people like myself can tell you what it is by reading your energy. But with me, I would have to chat with you or otherwise interact with you for at least 20 minutes to get a proper reading-- at least when chatting online.

some woman wanted to have a wolf as a totem animal because everywhere she went she always saw wolves, then one day she spoke to a wolf she saw and asked it if it was to be her partner in magic, and it said, oh no, we watch you because we don't trust you!

if in doubt, ask the fox!

I like that, it made me laugh.

...

As for the spirit animal business this is what I know.

Spirits come in various forms, they disguise themselves and change based on their thoughts. Animal spirits are very much the same, they are not strictly "stuck" in a form like we are. I would suggest asking the spirits or gods (whichever you prefer) to give you a physical link to what you are looking for; not fox per-se but an animal you can relate with and will relate with you. Spirit Animals these days Totem animals in particular are overused, and the term itself is abused in such a way it is silly. We Americans like to think the Natives didn't rub off on us at all but this is proof that they have. Though it does not mean we are calling up the same spirits.

Get some fur, knuckle bones, fangs, an idol, something that pleases the spirit and put it in a bag (do not get these items from the animal being hunted/murdered/etc). It may sound hard and now that I think of it: it should be, but things do happen (and they will). I got all my supplies unknowingly, and later read a (fiction) novel* describing in great detail my supplies and how they should be used (I did reference a non-fiction novel to verify it's accuracy). Once acquiring: this new bag should be held as 'sacred' and you'll know what to do with it from there. Though as a warning if your spirit is a trickster the bag will disappear and reappear on it's own from time to time.

If it's fox then good luck to you. Pay attention to fox-sized creatures because foxes tend to disguise themselves.

I was driving home at 4am and saw what looked like a baby deer crossing the street at a stop sign. I looked again and I saw a baby deer with a long tail entering someone's yard. At the sudden growth of a tail I outright stared at the thing until it turned into someone's dog loose in the neighborhood. "No dogs don't hold their heads that way" it was indeed a friend of mine crossing the street, and once I actually noticed it gave me that side-ways eyeball that K9's are known for.

*for conversational sake the novel was: Coyote Blue by Christopher Moore

@ Goibniu: Something important that I forgot to mention, and frankly I feel stupid for not doing so earlier, is that the next day after having that dream, my girlfriend's mother's dog was out in the fields barking ferociously at something. I thought it was just the neighbor's dog again so I dismissed it. He continued on for nearly an hour straight, so I went out to check what it was. When I did, I looked in the same direction he was, and there it was. What looked like a red fox was sitting at the edge of the woods, staring right at me, and stayed completely still even though a dalmation/beagle mix was barking insanely at him. After staring at him for maybe three to four minutes, the fox stood up, and lifted that signature bushy red tail with a white tip, turned away slowly, and disappeared. I was very exicted about the encounter....and yet somehow completely forgot about it until just yesterday.

@ esoterica: That's....funny. Hahaha.

@ Dancing Coyote: Haha, with the name Dancing Coyote, I kind of figured spirit animals were more your thing. I may try that method you mentioned. It shouldn't be hard around here. Animals die all the time around here. Nice story by the way. Also, another thing to remember if you suspect that an animal may be a fox in disguise, if the eyes look wrong, remember that fox have eyes unlike other canines. Theirs are like feline eyes. Just another way to denote the difference in appearance.

That's a bit more evidence to weigh on your side, but as esoterica said, "Ask the fox."

I could try, but honestly I have no idea how to go about that actually.
I could try doing it in a dream, but there's barely a chance that I will remember it. I have about a 1 in 25 chance of remembering even a portion of my dreams.
Meditation and divination won't work because of a rather annoying spirit that I can't seem to get rid of.
So, any suggestions, then?

Spirit animals are beings that we share a common bond with. Ask yourself how are you like a fox consider both the positive and negative aspects of foxes. Sometimes spirit animals choose their own people to form a kinship with. But you to can ask a spirit animal to be your guide. If you feel a strong connection to foxes, ask one to be your guide. And maybe if you decide you really don't have a strong bond to foxes you could choose another animal guide.

You ask the fox just like you ask for anything else. You phrase a question and utter it.... Do this before you go to sleep. It might take several days even several weeks. But if you ask "Are you my spirit guide" to this fox eventually you will get an answer. It may be that the spirit is in transit to some other realm and found you curious or maybe it is trying to get your attention to make you aware of something in your life that you need to be paying attention to.
