I've been reading this section and it seems filled with, "how do I do this in the first place?" So I'm going to go out and post my favored techniques and if any of you have questions feel free to ask. If any of the other more experienced practitioners have anything to add, subtract, or anything inbetween please do so.
To astrially travel it's best you have a clean space to work in, meaning somewhere comfortable and (if you're somewhat of an experienced practitioner) shielding on the space your in, and on oneself. Your body needs to be in the SAFEST place you can think of, for obvious reasons. Next you'll have to comfort yourself, getting into the mind-frame of abstract thought because you'll need it in that other realm. I usually look at some art previously, to grease the mental filters.
We got the basic prep work out of the way, now for the meat of the conquest. I find it easiest (and most comfortable) to lie down somewhere dark, some find it best if they're in the Lotus position, or their general meditation stance; whatever works for you. Now remember to keep your eyes closed, using your mental acuity and abstract thought to "project" your body into your immediate surroundings. Some say it's easiest to do some deep breathing and count down from Ten to Zero very slowly, with each number your energetic body starts moving outside the physical one, at Zero you should be fully outside of the body. This may take a few tries. The most common thing I hear from people traveling astrially is that they see their energetic body from the third person, this is normal. If the steps have worked you should be looking at your physical body meditating in your vicinity, some people freak out at this stage and jump back in their bodies realizing "I can do it!"
IMPORTANT Patients is the key, not everyone gets this on their first try. If one does succeed there are some warnings and things you should know in the field. You can ALWAYS find your body, think of a silver cord stretching from your physical body and your energetic body. If you should feel the need to come home simply pluck that chord like a guitar string and you'll find yourself back in your body with a jolt. Always remember not to eat or drink anything on your journeys, that would be a very bad thing. If you need an example think Pan's Labyrinth...

I agree that you shouldn't accept gifts or food and drink when on a spirit journey. I have always thought of it in terms of fairy tale logic. When you visit under the mounds, the accepting of gifts entails an obligation. This might be wrong, but it is what I was told by a shaman friend.
I use the rocking technique to go out of body. I go into seated meditation usually. Lying down entails the possibility of falling asleep. I send my breath through the microcosmic or macrocosmic orbit, down the conception channel up down the governing meridian, essentially cycling my energy in a circle from head to bottom of the torso, or from the crown of the head to the feet and back again. It creates a feeling as though I am on a swing, moving back and forth or perhaps a rocking. I feel the energy build up stronger and stronger. The energy builds especially in the base of the spine, moving upwards eventually to the head. Eventually it is like letting go of the swing and the momentum throws me out of body. It is hard to say how long it takes, but probably at least five minutes but less than twenty.

Don't worry. It'll only seem kinky the first time.

QUOTE(grim789 @ Nov 8 2009, 02:19 AM) First off i would like to thank Dancing Coyote for this post i will be trying your techniques and advice on caution. But i was wondering is there like any circles or anything to help this process? And if you dont mind i would love to hear about some of your and others experinces. So that when i try to astral project my first time i will kinda get a good idea of what to experience. (IMG: style_emoticons/default/yikes.gif) Thanks I'm glad you've found some use out of my rantings. I am unaware of any practicing circles that do astrial travel. Those in groups I've heard of use it differently. And this is how I've heard it used in a group: a few people generating power, someone keeping the group connected, someone channeling power, someone protecting the physical group, and finally the astrial traveler going about doing what the group needs. Otherwise as an initiatory experience a teacher will open the door to the realm of the spirits and the student will jump in (so to speak). I personally have invested interested in keeping that space updated, I have a 'magic(k)al temple in the spirit world where my current entities stay (Some I've created others have just fallen into my lap). To pinpoint my first experience would be difficult because I did it alot when I was a kid and rediscovered it when I was older. So here are some of the steps I went through when I was in my teens trying this out consciously. I would usually set a specific time to practice throughout the day which is very useful. I tried different positions and breathing patterns and settled into what worked for me, which is laying down and deep slow breathing. Initially I would start to try and visualize my spiritual body leaving my physical and mentally count down from ten with every number slowing my breath (only count down when you're ready to: it's distracting to keep an even pace between numbers). I then would feel a tingling sensation in my hands and feet, at that point I would get really excited and come out of the trance. Getting excited and stopping is normal, it took me several tries because the tingling sensation eventually envelopes the whole body and you can really tell you're on to something. I would also like to note that alot of people get a tingling sensation (I happen to be one of them) but not everyone gets this and even I have grown out of it. I think the sensation happens because we slowly leave our bodies on the first go round. I also got an auditory static sort of noise (kind of like a plane taking off) as I left my body, which I've never read as a common thing.

Thanks, Coyote i tried this for the first time last night i tried to invision my room in my mind kind of like a virtual tour then i counted down from ten. It was pretty weird first try though (IMG: style_emoticons/default/00000008.gif). It felt like something had made my whole body like numb and i started to have a headache but it went away really quick. I keep picturing my astral body leaving my physical one. And it was like a tingley sensation i didnt actually leave but i will definatly be practising this much much more... (IMG: style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

First, I'd like to thank coyote for their advice. These techniques have actually helped me more than what I've been doing before. Regarding the whole 'not eating anything offered to you on the astral' thing, I can attest to that with a story from one of my friends. The personification of Winter tried to seduce him. Not because she liked him that much, but because when an astral being has relations with a physical being, then they can have control over them, be it with an offspring or otherwise. I feel like this is the same kind of thing. Always remember that astral beings, like physical beings, almost always have an ulterior motive.
Again, thank you for your awesome posts, all of you.

I'm glad you've found some use out of my writing, and I thank you for your compliment. During my stay in florida I did some astrial/sex work with a succubus which eventually took a turn for the worst, ibut it was a very interesting experience.
