One path is to get a familiar to help you. Could be a spirit. Then you can cast better spells using a spellbook.

Some pointers I can give is to be mindful of the authors that you read. There is a lot of crap out there which contradicts each other. Keep a ritual diary and analyse results. Be mindful of your ego and do some spiritual work to understand it. I spent too much time as a young guy thinking I could get rid of my ego. You can say it is all about knowing thyself. Magick is not just about working spells and control over the material world, ultimately it is about gaining control over ourselves, growing as people and improving the world that we live in.
