Heh, it was hard to decide which genre to choose... Multiple choice next time, please (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Chose melodic metal although I'm not quite sure if 'melodic' should be a standalone genre... I would use it as a modifier... because my favourite genre is actually melodic death metal. I didn't choose 'death' because it would also include technical/brutal/whatever... Anyway, besides that I love folk metal (usually those playing humppa-like drums like Korpiklaani or Finntroll) but other types are good, too. Gothic or power or whatever, if you can handbang to it, it's good :] Oh, occult lyrics were mentioned. I don't know Vader lyrics, but Behemoth have a lot of them and their frontman's stage nickname is Nergal... And what is more, they have a concept album called Thelema.6 and guess what it's about (IMG: style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) BTW both bands come from Poland but I've never attended any of their gigs (IMG: style_emoticons/default/blush2.gif)

Well, if you like Dark Tranquility maybe other melodic death metal bands would be fine, too. Arch Enemy? They have a female vocalist, by the way. A female DEATH-GROWLING vocalist. Quite rare, don't you think? Hm, what else... Children of Bodom? (my favourite, I recommend their older albums like Hatebreeder or Follow the Reaper) Soilwork? I don't like this one but maybe you will. As far as technical death is concerned, why don't you try (the Mighty (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)) Morbid Angel (IMG: style_emoticons/default/evil2.gif) - providing you haven't. Some of their lyrics are great - and quite occult. Personally I prefer their 'slower' albums like Altars of Madness. Heavy, almost melodic & the speed is just fine for headbanging (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

QUOTE(Lucian @ Feb 22 2007, 03:38 AM) Ave First off, I would consider Cradle of Filth to be Black Metal, as well as Dimmu Borgir, as they have those elements of horror and symphonic metal, but not so much as I would call them anything other than straight Black. Secondly, White Zombie I would consider just Heavy Metal, Metallica is Thrash Metal, Pantera I would call closer to Thrash Metal, Korn is Nu Metal, Tool is an interesting enigma that I oh so love (IMG: style_emoticons/default/13.gif) , Type-O-Negative I would call Nu Metal, debate as you will, as far as the latter, they are just straight up ROCK AND ROLL BRUTHER! And, thirdly, ya'll kids be jealous because I am going to be throwing down at the Cradle' concert tonight!!! I'll pluck out an eye in memory of you guys who can't attend (IMG: style_emoticons/default/13.gif) Ad Scientiam P.S. I also am starting to like Metalcore, even though I abore anything labeled 'core thus far (IMG: style_emoticons/default/13.gif) Cradle of Filth is not black metal, nor is Dimmu Borgir. It strikes me that many of the users here simply listen to "gateway metal" which is basically (and I hate to say this) designed for fourteen year old boys with sensitive ears. Also "abore" is not a word, are you sure you do not mean "abhor"? (IMG: style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I don't get too high-strung on where bands are pigeon holed. If it sounds good to me it is good (IMG: style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) I do believe though that there are bands out there that "entice" you deeper into the metal scene, mainly the mainstream crap like Trivium (IMG: style_emoticons/default/00000041.gif) or Killswitch engage (IMG: style_emoticons/default/00000042.gif) but if you choose to settle with that level of metal... cool, I mean, where does it change from being "gateway metal" to actual metal. Who are the real deal and who are the pretenders? This post has been edited by al_zaine: Feb 3 2009, 11:20 AM

QUOTE(al_zaine @ Dec 14 2009, 05:41 PM) (IMG: style_emoticons/default/punk.gif) BEHEMOTH (IMG: style_emoticons/default/punk.gif) They just blow me away with their awesome-ness!!! Yeah, that's right - especially their newest album "Evangelion". Seriously, 'Daimonos', 'Ov Fire and the Void' and the first track since quite a long time (I guess) which is in Polish, 'Lucifer' <- these three massively utterly kick @ss (IMG: style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) And the rest of the album is great, too. Just listen to the delicious, complex and yet so brutal drum work. And the album comes with explanations of the highly occult/philosophical lyrics in the booklet. So... if someone doesn't quite like the old Behemoth, just give this album a try and then prepare to be converted (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

So... if someone doesn't quite like the old Behemoth, just give this album a try and then prepare to be converted (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I'm not a fan of Behemoth, bought there record DemiGod or something to that degree while i was england but didn't like it; the music and the screaming is far too brutal for me (i think the singer of that band has the most hardcore screaming voice in the history of metal, beating canibal corpse's singer. I guess i was trying to be a bad ass by buying the album and feeling cool and bad ass and all but it wasn't quite my cup of tea. My favourite band of all time is Avenged Sevenfold. Through their lyrics and music, i literally FOUND[size=6] myself. Their record city of evil changed my life, for reasons i won't go into now save for the fact that i feel that all the beautiful melodies in the world are included in that album. Sometimes i think that there aren't any other melodious songs out there, or atleast they cannot even come close to comparing to the melodies intrinsic of city of evil. With all that said, i think i will buy this album you mentioned. The reasons are two-fold. Firstly because of the drum work you mentioned, i love intensely complex drum work; i guess thats's why i love the Rev of avenged sevenfold. He is arguably the best drummer ever to walk this planet; i guess that must have something to do with the fact that he got best drummer of the year in 2007 or 6, don't recall right now. Secondly because the album has descrrptions and incorporations of occult phenomenon; which i just love cuz i believe it compliments metal greatly. I didn't like the way the band incorporated philosophy (Nietzche's ubermeich namely) and occult iedealogies in their album demigod though. I feel that they were flaunting their "knowledge" An example is that they included a quote by friedrich nieztche about rising to power out of the blue. It didn't even directly tie with the lyrics,. atleast not to my knowledge. I also had problems accepting the contradictory idealogies they presented in the album included the commentary. I cant remember what exactly it was that ticked me off and made me laugh my arse off but yeah. You get me! (IMG: style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

DOOOM! Since I was 14 (not including the nu-metal my parents listened to when i was growing up) I've been listening to quite an arrangement of metal, especially Doom Metal, when I was 16 I took an 1/8 mushrooms for the first time to Electric Wizard, Bathory, Sabbath, Acid, Autopsy, Blood Ceremony, and Vitus. It was...pretty weird, but divine and ugly and the same time. I'm almost 18 now and have never experienced anything better in my life. Hah.
By the way, hello, My name is Chris and I'm a huge horror buff and vinyl prick, and I'm currently studying all aspects of the occult, nice to meet you guys.
--------------------
I hear Khephra's mighty droning from afar, His mighty wings high upon a northern Star, "How long must I suffer, how must I pent?" And I recieved an answer; "conquer all, my beloved brother, God-sent."
"Only then ye be free of your enemies, Grossly, heavy, ruddy, and brute, Thou must join us in Mighty Work So quicken thyself and behold the Absolute."
Brushing myself off, I took up a Garment, Seven-fold in essence, Celestial in root.
"I have become reborn, oh God the Author. I have glimpsed Thy Veins, Thy Marrow, Thy Face, I have performed Thy Miracle, I have obtained Thy Red Lion, from the muck of Thy Vase!"
